President Trump on Wednesday floated the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait.”
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump said.

CNBC shared further:
Trump and his administration have repeatedly insisted that Iran has lost control over the strait, which carried one-fifth of the world’s oil trade before the war began in late February.
But transits through the waterway remain far below prewar levels, and ship-trackers say they have dropped further in recent days, as military strikes in the region have resumed following a weekslong hiatus.
The Trump administration asserts that total oil exports from the region are now higher than they were before the war began, if the tally includes Saudi Arabia’s and the United Arab Emirate’s pipelines that bypass Hormuz.
ADVERTISEMENTU.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC on Wednesday that more than 17 million barrels of oil transited the strait on Monday, a new wartime record. Around 20 million barrels per day of crude and products passed through the strait before the war started on Feb. 28.
Trump previously said he would declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory.
“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said during a speech in New York.
“Essentially that’s what we have. The blockade ‒ no ships get through,” he added.

More from The National News Desk:
The suggestion follows Trump’s move last week to sign an executive order directing the federal government to use “Lake America” for Lake Ontario amid a trade dispute with Canada.
Google announced Saturday that it would begin displaying “Lake America” on Maps for U.S. users.
The Lake Ontario order applies to U.S. federal use, following Trump’s earlier move to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” in government materials. Trump later proclaimed Feb. 9, 2025, the first “Gulf of America Day.”
