Just shortly after launching a successful military operation in Venezuela, President Trump has once again set his eyes on Greenland.
In an interview with The Atlantic, President Trump stated the United States needs Greenland for security purposes.
In response to Trump’s statement, spokespersons for both Greenland and Denmark have condemned any attempt by the United States to annex Greenland.
USA Today reported more on Trump’s latest remarks on Greenland:
A day after the U.S. military toppled Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, President Donald Trump appeared to have his eyes trained on the next target for American intervention: Greenland.
ADVERTISEMENTSince taking office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly floated buying the ice-covered Arctic island from Denmark and has refused to rule out taking the resource-rich land through military force. Trump has argued that annexing Greenland is a national security necessity, noting its mass of critical minerals and strategic location.
He renewed those calls Sunday, Jan. 4 as his administration took a victory lap for their ouster of Venezuela’s socialist dictator and as he promised to “run” the South American country until a democratic transition could occur.
“We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense,” Trump told The Atlantic in an interview published Jan. 4, describing the island as reportedly “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.”
The same day, Katie Miller, the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, posted a photo of Greenland covered with the American flag. Above it, Miller wrote “SOON.”
Denmark’s ambassador to the United States, Jesper Moeller Soerensen, responded, saying: “We expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”

CBS News reported on Denmark’s response to Katie Miller’s post:
This is a Guest Post from our friends over at WLTReport. View the original article here.Denmark on Sunday made its displeasure known after the wife of one of President Trump’s most influential aides posted a social media picture of Greenland painted in the colors of the United States flag.
Katie Miller — wife of Mr. Trump’s deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller — put the contentiously altered image of the Danish autonomous territory on her X feed late Saturday, hours after the U.S. military operation against Venezuela.

Denmark’s ambassador to the U.S., Jesper Moeller Soerensen, reacted on Sunday with his own post saying “we expect full respect for the territorial integrity” of Denmark, above a link to Katie Miller’s image.
“We are close allies and should continue to work together as such,” Soerensen said of Denmark’s relationship with the U.S. He added that both countries “work together to ensure security in the Arctic” and his “significantly boosted its Arctic security efforts” in 2025, an example of how it takes their “joint security seriously.”
