The House of Representatives voted last month to advance legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent, thus eliminating the need for twice-yearly time changes.
President Donald Trump has long advocated for the elimination of the widely unpopular clock interruptions in the spring and autumn, and he shared his thoughts on the latest development in Congress.
As The Hill reported:
“For many years, the vast Majority of Americans have asked to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but no Administration has been able to get it done, until now,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Last month, the lower chamber voted 308-117 for the Sunshine Protection Act of 2025, which would make daylight saving time the permanent standard time nationwide. Twenty-two Republicans and 95 Democrats voted against the measure, which retiring Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) introduced last year.
Trump on Tuesday urged Senate Republicans to back the legislation, saying the change “is an issue that Republicans, Democrats, and Independents can unite behind.”

Support for the legislation has generally come from lawmakers representing coastal states, while opposition has been concentrated among lawmakers from the Midwest and agriculture-heavy states.
Trump argued that making daylight saving time permanent would strengthen the economy and provide Americans with an extra hour of evening daylight.
“For Cities and States with Watchtowers, and hard to reach places, it costs Millions of Dollars,” he said.
