FDNY commissioner Robert Tucker announced his resignation on Wednesday following Zohran Mamdani’s electoral victory to become New York City’s next mayor.
Mayor Eric Adams appointed Tucker in August 2024.
Tucker did not elaborate on the reason for his resignation.
“Thank you to Mayor Adams for his trust and confidence in doing this job,” Tucker said in a statement, according to NBC New York.
“It is my intention to resign the office effective Friday, December 19, 2025. Between now and then, I will continue to lead the greatest fire department in the world and will ensure an orderly transition,” he added.

More from the New York Post:
Tucker, a Jewish philanthropist and businessman, will step down from the role he has held for just over 12 months on Dec. 19, sources said.
He will go back to running the private security firm, T&M, which he headed before joining Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, the sources added.
News of Tucker’s resignation came just as the FDNY boss was set to fly to Israel later Wednesday to meet with a fire commissioner in the Jewish state.
Tucker’s reasons for tendering his resignation were not immediately clear. The Post has reached out to the commissioner for comment.
The FDNY’s 35th commissioner stepped in to lead the department in August 2024, replacing Laura Kavanagh, who had a tumultuous tenure at the helm.
According to The Hill, people close to Tucker indicated the FDNY commissioner felt he couldn’t serve under Mamdani.

The Hill noted:
The mayor-elect will be the first Muslim to serve in the role and has been openly critical of Israel amid the war in Gaza. Despite the criticism, he also reached out to the Jewish community during his campaign and stated his intention to combat antisemitism if elected.
The mayor appoints the fire commissioner, who oversees roughly 17,000 employees and manages a $2.6 billion budget.
ADVERTISEMENTMamdani bested former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, during Tuesday night’s mayoral election with 50.6 percent of the vote, according to a live tracker from Decision Desk HQ. The election saw 2 million voters cast ballots.
