An American Airlines flight was forced to cancel its takeoff when another aircraft entered the departure runway.

The incident happened at Los Angeles International Airport around 10:35 p.m. local time on Sunday when a cargo flight entered the same runway without authorization.

The airline confirmed to Fox Business that “the crew observed another aircraft on the runway,” forcing the Boston-bound flight to cancel its takeoff.

Fox Business shared further info:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says the potential dangerous situation happened when AeroLogic Flight 619 “crossed a runway at Los Angeles International Airport without authorization.”

Air traffic controllers told the American crew to cancel takeoff.

“The closest proximity of the two aircraft was approximately 5,200 feet,” the FAA said in a statement.

Flight tracking website FlightAware shows AeroLogic Flight 618 has just landed at LAX after a 10-hour plus flight from Shanghai, China.

ABC World News Tonight shared audio from the incident:

More from ABC News:

“There was plenty of room for the American jet to abort; they only got within about a mile. It’s one of those things that if the runway had been any shorter, [or] it had been a different airport, this could have been a tragedy.”

American Airlines said the Boston-bound flight later departed on another aircraft.

“We thank our crew members for their quick action and our customers for their understanding,” the airline said in a statement.

FAA data shows there have been 101 runway incursions caused by pilot deviations in 2025.

One of the most serious close calls was in March at Chicago’s Midway International Airport, where a Southwest Airlines jet aborted landing and performed a go-around after a business jet entered the runway without authorization.

AeroLogic said in a statement to ABC News that “no personal injury or damage occurred” in the incident and that the company is “in contact with the relevant authorities and is investigating the incident.”
