On Wednesday a gunman opened fire at a Minneapolis apartment complex resulting in the deaths of two people and leaving five people wounded from gunshot wounds.

Of the five wounded, two were Minneapolis police officers who responded to the scene.

Now, authorities have released the suspect’s name and identified him as 35-year-old Carlton Johnson II.

The New York Post was the first to report on the identity of the suspect and provided details on his background:

A suspected gunman accused of shooting dead two people at his Minneapolis apartment complex allegedly told residents he would “kill someone” and previously threatened to gun down his ex-girlfriend.

Carlton Johnson II, 35, clashed with residents at Shoreline Plaza, where he allegedly assaulted one person, and showed off his gun in several incidents this year over a six-month time frame, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported.

He was slapped with an eviction notice and faced a hearing on September 11 — nine days before Wednesday’s rampage.

Johnson allegedly killed two people and injured six – including three cops – before reportedly taking his own life. Cops have not formally named him as the perp, but was identified as the shooter by people with knowledge of the investigation, according to the outlet.

Neighbors recalled Johnson had seemingly been plotting some sort of massacre in the days before the shooting.

Johnson, who lived alone, allegedly threatened to shoot his ex-girlfriend and two property managers, his neighbor of a few months, Chris Miller, told the Star Tribune, recalling a conversation that happened on either Sunday or Monday.

“He said, ‘I’m going to shoot people,’” Miller said. “He was very, very angry, drunk and mad.”

Derrick Thompson, who had recently moved out of the apartment complex, claimed Johnson was “fighting people every day, every damn day,” according to the Star Tribune.

Thompson said Johnson was someone who socialized with neighbors but had “lost everything.”

Fox 9 Minneapolis provided a statement from Mayor Jacob Frey:

On Wednesday night, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and interim Minneapolis Police Chief Bill Peterson both spoke about the bravery of the officers involved.

“It’s extremely difficult. You know, it is nothing short of heroic. Our officers go through tons and tons of training, you know, to be able to respond to incidents like this. It’s truly sickening that in my career, 31 years here with the Minneapolis Police Department, this is the third incident like this that has happened in my career,” said Chief Peterson. “But our officers have shown that they are willing and that they do respond and run toward gunfire when others are running from it. And it is absolutely heroic.”

Mayor Frey added: “I can’t emphasize enough how dangerous this situation was and how heroic our officers were in response. They rescued victims, brought people to safety, helped get approximately four people to the hospital, all while getting shot at themselves. We’re all standing with the victims and families impacted by this senseless act.”
