Rumors circulated that Buffalo Niagara International Airport in New York ran out of fuel and couldn’t refuel aircraft.

However, the problem was caused by a technical issue impacting the transfer of fuel.

A representative from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) confirmed the airport did not have an issue with the fuel itself.

“At no time did the Buffalo Niagara International Airport experience a fuel shortage,” the representative said, according to WIVB.

“A technical issue has temporarily disrupted the transfer of fuel, however, regular airport operations are minimally affected. Passengers are advised to check with their airline for specific flight information,” the representative added.

That did not prevent social media posts from speculating that the airport was reportedly out of fuel.

Passengers at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport may face significant delays Monday after an issue was reported at the fuel farm’s circuit system, prompting impacts on departing flights, according to a Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) official.

The NFTA official clarified details regarding the earlier Federal Aviation Administration Notice to Airmen alert about a possible fuel shortage at the Buffalo-Niagara Airport.

“BUF is a small airport is not fed via pipeline but via truck. There could be an equipment issue at the local terminal, there could be a quality issue, it’s hard to know, but this is not concerning at this point. Airlines can mostly tanker in additional fuel now they’re aware,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for Gas Buddy.

Emergency repairs are underway on the fuel farm’s circuit system.

As a result, some flights are being diverted.
