California Democrat Tom Steyer just told a male athlete he was proud of him for beating girls.

Steyer posted a video with AB Hernandez, a transgender-identifying athlete competing in California girls track and field.

In the clip, Steyer told Hernandez he was proud of him for succeeding and competing.

The timing was no accident. Steyer is running for office in California, and the primary landed Tuesday.

The video showed exactly what Steyer chose to endorse:

Hernandez is not a marginal competitor. OutKick and Fox reported that Hernandez advanced to the final round of the California state championship in long jump, triple jump, and high jump after Friday’s preliminaries.

So a billionaire Democrat chose to celebrate a male athlete sweeping his way into three girls finals.

California’s response to the backlash has been its own kind of insult to the girls involved.

OutKick and Fox reported that the state’s CIF pilot program awards any female athlete who finishes behind Hernandez one spot higher, which results in shared podium spots.

In other words, the girls who actually competed as girls get to split the podium with the male athlete who displaced them.

This is the policy Steyer looked at and decided to applaud.

Fox News Digital reported:

Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton condemned Steyer for supporting trans athletes in girls’ sports in an interview with Fox News Digital on Friday.

“Tom Steyer has taken a wildly extreme position on this issue that is totally out of touch with most California families and young people,” Hilton told Fox News Digital before the rally,” Hilton said.

Hilton’s campaign then shared Steyer’s post on X, mocking the Democrat.

In the video, posted to Steyer’s social media account, Hernandez spoke about being “outed” and “doxed.”

“I’ve been outed like, so many times over and over, you know doxed, where I go to school, so I feel like, more safety aspect, and not just supporting but…” Hernandez began, before Steyer added, “protecting.” “Yeah, protection,” Hernandez responded.

Steyer went on to say that he “totally agrees.”

“It’s the job of the governor to stand between danger and Californians. And I mean it, and to make sure that people are safe, and to protect them from all the maligned influences in this world.

And I take that super super seriously for you. And I’m so proud of you for what you’re doing,” Steyer said.

President Trump saw this coming a year ago.

Breitbart reported that President Trump warned California in May 2025 against allowing transgender-identifying males in girls sports and considered withholding large-scale federal funding over the issue.

Breitbart reported:

California Democrat gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer is trying to force voters to accept biological males competing in female sports, telling one transgender athlete he was “proud” of him.

Steyer posted a video of himself talking with teenage athlete AB Hernandez, who recently dominated state finals, bringing protests and outrage from parents and female competitors, according to Breitbart News.

In the clip, Hernandez, who is wearing a dress and carrying a purse, told Steyer it was “nice” for him to be open about who he supported when it came to the transgender issue.

“Most people support you 90 percent of the time, just not the 10 percent you need them for,” Steyer told him, adding his team supported him 100 percent. Hernandez claimed people had “outed” him several times and “doxxed” him, adding he felt there needed to be more protection.

“I totally agree,” Steyer replied, adding it was the governor’s job to protect citizens and “protect them from all the malign influences in this world. And I take that super, super, super seriously for you… and I’m so proud of you for what you’re doing.

So proud of you for succeeding. So proud of you for competing.”

That is the choice on the ballot in California. One side wants federal pressure to protect girls’ sports.

The other side is filming proud videos with the athlete beating them.

Republican Steve Hilton was not playing along.

Hilton’s campaign put the fight directly in front of California voters:

The race was tight heading into Tuesday. Breitbart cited California Post polling that had Hilton tied with Steyer at 25 percent before the primary.

Steyer had the money and the name recognition. He still decided that praising a male athlete dominating girls competition was a winning message for California Democrats.

The girls on those shared podiums did not get a video. They got displaced, and they got a billionaire telling the athlete who beat them how proud he was.
