The 22-year-old, said to be armed with a hammer and knife, was arrested in the city of Carcasonne and is suspected of planning terrorist attacks on American and Russian tourists, officials said.

He was reportedly planning to attack tourists first before targeting police.

According to reports, the man converted to Islam in 2014 and has a history of psychiatric disorders and was diagnosed with schizophrenia, although this has not been confirmed.

Millions of holidaymakers, including a large number of Britons, have descended on France for the month-long football tournament.

Around 2.5 million spectators are expected to watch the 51 matches, which culminate with the final on July 10.

The arrest follows a security alert issued by French and Belgian security services about two Islamic State terror cells who are travelling to France from Syria to carry out attacks.

Belgian counter-terrorism experts have warned French police to be on their guard against the jihadis who left Syria 10 days ago.
