A transgender cheerleader has been kicked out of a Texas college cheerleading camp after allegedly attacking a female teammate who she claims called her a “man with a penis.”
On the night of July 21, Averie Chanel Medlock, 25, was cited with criminal assault by physical contact after she was accused of choking out a 17-year-old teammate, Karleigh, who allegedly made ‘transphobic remarks’ towards her.
After the physical attack, Karleigh and the other teammates locked themselves in a locker room to hide from Medlock while police were called to the scene. In the meantime, Medlock recorded a video of herself talking to the teammates – a video which she claims proves that she was not violent towards anyone. However, this video was taken while the girls were hiding in the locker room, and therefore took place after the suspected altercation.
In the video, Medlock is trying to downplay whatever had just occurred prior to the girls locking themselves in a locker room. She is heard telling the other cheerleaders to “calm down” and asking them to let her into the room.
“If anyone has a problem, come address it to my face like an adult,” says Medlock. She also states that, in regards to the alleged attack, she “barely touched Karleigh” and was “just joking with Karleigh.”
From inside the locker room, girls can be heard saying “you’re a man” and “you have a penis.”
Following the incident, Medlock posted on Facebook, saying “Well guys I’m officially retired as a cheerleader as of last night at 5:30AM. A girl on the team was being very disrespectful and told me I am a MAN with a PENIS and that [guys] should not be on the team.”
“I stood up for myself and she called her mom and dad because she was scared because I [stood] up for myself,” continued Medlock. “Her father said ‘she still has testosterone and a penis and I will kill anyone who comes after my daughter.”
In this post, Medlock makes it seem as though she was kicked off the team for merely defending herself as a trans woman, not for physically attacking someone.
As referenced in Medlock’s Facebook post, Karleigh’s father, Mike Jones, was called to the scene of the reported attack. Jones also posted to Facebook, sharing his account of the events.
Jones reported that his terrified daughter called him at 1 a.m. after barricading herself behind a door to hide from Medlock who had just choked her out. Several teammates back up this version of the story.
“I ask you what you would have done when receiving a phone call at 1 o’clock in the morning from your daughter stating that they had locked themselves in the room with other girls, after this person said ‘You want to fight,’ and proceeded to put their hands around my daughter’s neck,” wrote Jones.
Medlock maintains that she did not harm Karleigh, and is instead being targeted for her race and gender.
“They knew that I was trans. They knew that I was different from all the other girls. It wasn’t a big deal until her dad came up there and made a scene,” Medlock told KTAB and KRBC News. “I was kicked off the team for assumptions because of the dad’s assumptions of what happened.”
Medlock also told KTAB and KRBC that the criminal citation she was issued was for verbal assault. However, the record shows it was, in fact, a misdemeanor citation for Assault by Physical Contact.
