On Friday, Elon Musk was sending mixed messages about his proposed $44 billion purchase of Twitter.
First, tweeted about the Twitter deal being on temporary hold pending details supporting the calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users.
Musk followed up with a tweet saying: “Still committed to acquisition.”

President Trump also cast doubt on Elon Musk’s purchase of the highly censored social media platform from his free speech platform, Truth Social.
In a series of messages on Truth Social, Trump’s new social media platform, he wrote about Elon Musk being smart enough to know better than to pay $44 billion for Twitter, knowing that the majority of users are bots or spam accounts.
In his first message, Trump wrote:
There is no way Elon Musk is going to buy Twitter at such a ridiculous price, especially since realizing it is a company largely based on BOTS or Spam Accounts. Fake anyone? By the time you get rid of them, if that can even be done, what do you have? Not much? If it weren’t for the ridiculous Billion Dollar breakup fee, Elon would have already been long gone. Just my opinion, but Truth Social is MUCH better than Twitter and is absolutely exploding, incredible engagement.
In another post on Truth Social, Trump asks how the deal can go through when Elon “may have illegally bought his shares”? Finally, after Elon offered for Trump to come back to Twitter, Trump responded by telling Elon “I appreciate the offer, but I will never go back to Twitter.” He concluded his post by saying, “I love the TRUTH!”
Only a stupid person would buy Twitter for that price, and Elon is not a stupid person. Besides, how can the deal go through when he may have illegally bought his shares? Would be very unfair to all of those shareholders, past, present, and future, who got “screwed.” I appreciate the offer, but I will never go back to Twitter. I love TRUTH!
Trump is usually right about these things. Free speech advocates hope he’s wrong and that Elon Musk will turn Twitter into a safe space for free speech.
