Former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard joined President Trump on stage at his rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, and announced she is joining the Republican Party.

“It is because of my love for our country and, specifically because of the leadership that President Trump has brought to transform the Republican Party and bring it back to the party of the people and the party of peace, that I’m proud to stand here with you today President Trump and announce that I’m joining the Republican Party,” Gabbard said.

“I’m joining the party of the people. The party of equality. The party that was founded to fight against and end slavery in this country. It is the party of common sense, and the party that is led by a president who has the courage and strength to fight for peace,” she continued.

“The Democrat Party has no home for people like us, but we do have a home in the Republican Party — where we are welcomed with open arms by President Trump and so many of you who love our country,” she added, according to the New York Post.

More from the New York Post:

Gabbard, a veteran, blasted “warmongers” — like former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter, former GOP Wyoming Sen. Liz Cheney — for supporting Harris, 59, and “who care more about power and feeding the military-industrial complex than they care about you, the American people, and peace.

“President Trump has pledged to end wars, not start them. And this is why, in the eyes of the Kamala Harris-Dick Cheney Democrat Party, they will do everything possible to try to destroy him,” she added, accusing them of weaponizing the federal government “to try to silence him.”

“This man has the courage to take them on and root out the deep rot of corruption and the swamp in Washington.”

Trump, 78, later noted that he was not expecting Gabbard’s announcement.

“Wow, that was a surprise,” the former president said, calling it a “great honor” to have influenced Gabbard to join the ranks of the GOP.

“You know, I was a Democrat for over 20 years. Today’s Democrat Party is completely unrecognizable, which points to the clear choice that we have in this Election Day,” Gabbard said, according to the New York Post.

“When you look at the party of Kamala Harris, for example, she is anti-freedom. She is pro-censorship, she is pro-open borders and she is pro-war without even pretending to care about peace,” she added.

Per Fox News:

Tulsi Gabbard served as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 through 2016 before resigning to officially endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) for president.

Gabbard, who ran in 2020’s presidential election as a Democrat, took on then-candidate Kamala Harris with force at a primary debate, tearing apart her career as a prosecutor and California attorney general.

At the time, Gabbard called out Harris’ for prosecuting numerous marijuana-related cases to convictions and her impact on the cash bail system in California.

Ultimately, Gabbard left the Democrat party in 2022, declaring herself an independent. In the time since, she has started her own podcast and spoken at conservative events.

“For independent-thinkers like myself, there is no home in the Democrat Party. However, there is a home for us in the Republican Party. The Republican Party of warmongering elite Dick Cheney is in the past. Trump’s GOP is a big open tent party of the people, equality, commonsense, and the party that is led by a President who has the courage and strength to fight for peace,” Gabbard wrote.

“Tonight I stood with President Trump and announced I am joining the Republican Party. President Trump is our best and only hope in this election to lead our country toward a future where every one of us can live in a truly free, peaceful, and prosperous nation. Now is the time for us to stand together, vote for Trump and save our country,” she added.
