According to a Reuters report, the United States rejected a suggestion from Russian President Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire to the conflict with Ukraine.

“Putin sent signals to Washington in 2023 in public and privately through intermediaries, including through Moscow’s Arab partners in the Middle East and others, that he was ready to consider a ceasefire in Ukraine, the Russian sources said,” Reuters reports.

U.S. sources reportedly denied there had been any official contact, and they wouldn’t begin discussions that didn’t involve Ukraine.

“The contacts with the Americans came to nothing,” a Russian source reportedly told Reuters on the condition on anonymity.

The discussions reportedly took place in late 2023 and early 2024.

Reuters reports:

A second Russian source with knowledge of the contacts told Reuters that the Americans told Moscow, via the intermediaries, they would not discuss a possible ceasefire without the participation of Ukraine and so the contacts ended in failure.

A third source with knowledge of the discussions said: “Everything fell apart with the Americans.” The source said that the Americans did not want to pressure Ukraine.

The extent of the contacts – and their failure – has not previously been reported.

It comes as U.S. President Joe Biden has for months been pushing Congress to approve more aid for Ukraine, but has faced opposition from allies of Republican presidential nomination frontrunner Donald Trump.

The Kremlin, the White House, the U.S. State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) all declined to comment.

The report follows the U.S. Senate voting to send tens of billions of dollars to the Ukrainian regime to continue the conflict with Russia.

According to a prior report by German newspaper Berliner Zeitung, the United States disrupted peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

The “peace talks” reportedly occurred shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

United States Thwarted Russia-Ukraine Peace Negotiations?

Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed former United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson squashed peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

“We negotiated with Ukraine in Istanbul, we agreed, he was aware of this. He [Zelensky] even put his preliminary signature on the document I am telling you about,” Putin said.

“But then he publicly stated to the whole world: ‘We were ready to sign this document. But Mr. Johnson, then the Prime Minister of Great Britain, came and dissuaded us from doing this, saying it was better to fight Russia. And we agreed with this proposal,’” he continued.

“And the fact that they obey the demand or persuasion of Mr. Johnson, the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, seems ridiculous and very sad to me,” he added.
