On Wednesday, a 38-year-old U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed during a high-speed vehicle chase of a group of illegal immigrants in Mission, Texas. The agent, Raul Gonzalez, was a father to two children.

In a statement, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz released details of the incident. Ortiz revealed that, at approximately 1:00 am, Gonzalez was “patrolling the international boundary on an all-terrain vehicle” and “was tracking a group of subjects that illegally crossed the border.” He was pursuing this group at a high speed when he crashed his ATV into a closed fence. He was found unresponsive by fellow Border Patrol agents, who “immediately initiated life-saving efforts and requested EMS.”

Gonzalez was rushed to a hospital, but they could not save him from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Ortiz added,

“The death of an agent who died while securing our nation’s border is a tremendous loss for our organization and our nation. Our prayers are with his family and co-workers during this difficult time.”

The San Benito Police Department released a statement on Facebook mourning the passing of Gonzalez. They wrote, “Today, we mourn alongside our RVG Sector Border Patrol Family on the loss of Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez… May he rest in peace.”

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website, Gonzalez is the sixth Border Patrol agent to die this year in the line of duty.

This tragic accident occurred just one day after Joe Biden refused to visit the U.S.-Mexico border while visiting Arizona, saying that he had “more important things” to do, adding that going to the border would be a “political stunt.”

These statements drew criticism from the National Border Patrol Council President, Brandon Judd.

“Nothing is more important than the safety and security of the American people, but to President Biden, it is an afterthought,” said Judd. “With a record number of people and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, crossing our border illegally and evading apprehension, it is apparent Biden cares more about politics than our children, friends, and neighbors. Biden’s record clearly proves he cares about politics, not about doing his job of protecting American lives.”

Biden has not visited the border during his presidency, and Vice President/border czar Kamala Harris has only visited one time.
