America’s second family just got a little bigger — and this birth has made a bit of history along the way.
Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced Sunday that they have welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance.
The family shared the happy news directly from the vice president’s official X account, along with the first photograph of their newborn son:

Now that is a beautiful sight.
According to the family’s announcement, Alec arrived Sunday morning. Usha and the baby are both happy and healthy, while big brothers Ewan and Vivek and big sister Mirabel are said to be overjoyed.
The Vances also thanked the physicians, nurses and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, along with the White House medical team, for taking such good care of their family.
That gratitude matters. Behind all the titles, motorcades and security details, this was still a mother giving birth, a father welcoming his son and three children meeting their new baby brother.
And judging by the response, plenty of Americans were ready for some good news.

The announcement was not a political event, and that was precisely what made the reaction so refreshing. For a moment, people across the political world simply stopped to celebrate a family and a healthy new baby.

There is a remarkable historical footnote here, too.
The Associated Press reports that Alec is the first child born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years. The last known example came in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen, welcomed their son while Colfax served in the Grant administration.
That makes Alec’s arrival more than a treasured family milestone. It places the newest member of the Vance family in a tiny and unusual corner of American history.
The official White House biography of Usha Vance describes a family already centered on its three older children and notes the second lady’s work encouraging childhood literacy. Alec now joins Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel as the youngest member of a family growing up under circumstances almost no other American children have experienced.
Vice President Vance has spoken often about marriage, children and the importance of building a culture that welcomes family life. On Sunday, that message became wonderfully personal.
Politics is loud, and Washington can be ugly.
But the birth of a child cuts through all of it.
