A man who is a detention officer with ICE drove his truck towards a line of people protesting immigration policies outside a detention facility in Rhode Island. He’s been put on leave since the incident but it’s obvious from the video below that he was just trying to get through the crowd slowly.

In light of the fact that there have been four attacks on ICE in the past month, this ICE employee had every right to be frightened of an attack from these protesters.

Protesters were sitting down, blocking entrance to the parking lot of the facility and the man was trying to move through a barricade.

It’s clear from the video that they could have moved out of the way of the truck but refused. The driver stopped and then moved forward slowly when the protesters began to pound on the truck.

The protesters were then pepper-sprayed by corrections officers.

The New York Post reports that five people were injured. Two protesters were struck by the truck, and three were hit with pepper spray.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha and the state police said they will launch an investigation.

“Once we have a full understanding of the relevant facts, we will determine how to proceed,” Neronha said in a statement. “Peaceful protest is a fundamental right of all Americans; it is unfortunate last night’s situation unfolded as it did. We urge all to exercise restraint as our investigation proceeds.”
