A driver waiting at a busy Missouri intersection was suddenly boxed in by a pickup truck.

Then three people jumped out and opened fire in broad daylight.

The attack unfolded just before 11 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of Missouri 291 at Northeast Chipman Road in Lee’s Summit.

Dashcam video captured the suspects spilling out of a dark pickup and firing multiple rounds into the vehicle stopped in front of them.

Here is the clearest view of how quickly it happened:

KCTV5 reported that officers were called to Missouri 291 and Northeast Chipman Road after gunfire erupted at about 10:50 a.m. The victim vehicle had been stopped in the southbound lanes when three suspects wearing dark clothing approached and fired into it.

Police found two injured people. One had been struck by gunfire and was taken to a hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

The second victim was hit by shattered glass and treated for those injuries.

The report also confirmed that witnesses helped officers identify the suspects’ pickup before investigators reviewed footage from the city’s network of license-plate cameras. Southbound traffic was shut down while officers searched the scene and collected evidence.

Those two victims are the people at the center of this story. They were sitting in a vehicle at a traffic light when multiple shooters ran up and started firing.

Police said the three suspects were wearing dark clothing. Witness statements and surveillance footage from Flock cameras helped investigators identify the vehicle they believe was used in the shooting.

It was described as a dark gray Ford F-150 with a California vanity license plate.

The truck was last seen leaving the scene and making a U-turn onto northbound Missouri 291. Police closed the southbound highway at Chipman Road while officers processed the shooting scene, forcing drivers away from one of the city’s busier intersections.

The closure lasted for nearly two hours before the roadway reopened. By Wednesday evening, police had not announced an arrest, released the vanity-plate wording, or said whether investigators believed the victims had been specifically targeted.

Police had not released the suspects’ races, names, ages, or motive at the time of publication. Online guesses about any of those details are not verified facts.

What the video does establish is alarming enough: three people approached a stopped vehicle, fired repeatedly at close range, and escaped in the middle of traffic on a Wednesday morning.

KSHB 41 reported that Lee’s Summit police were still searching for the suspects after the highway reopened. The department had not released names, detailed physical descriptions, a suspected motive, or an explanation for why the victims’ vehicle was attacked.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting, saw the F-150 before or after the attack, or has relevant camera footage to come forward. Even a partial recollection of the California vanity plate could help investigators narrow the search.

Whatever led to this attack, somebody may recognize the truck, the clothing, or the suspects’ movements.

That information could be what gets three armed attackers off the street before somebody else is caught at the next red light.
