President Trump arrived at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg on Saturday with one of the most unusual backdrops a presidential visit could produce: the third round of the Irish Open was unfolding only yards away.

Air Force One first passed over the County Clare course. Marine One then descended near the action as spectators watched from the dunes and tournament leaders kept playing.

The visit put a presidential arrival, a major golf championship and the Atlantic coast of Ireland into the same frame.

The 42, reporting from the course, said Marine One made its final approach shortly before 3 p.m. local time while Irish golfer Shane Lowry was preparing an approach shot on the second hole, the part of the course closest to the presidential landing area.

Lowry played into the green as the helicopter descended. The interruption did not appear to disrupt him, and play continued after the arrival sequence unfolded beside the course.

The report said Air Force One had crossed over Doonbeg roughly an hour earlier, giving those below another unmistakable sign that the presidential party was close.

After leaving Marine One, Trump traveled to the 18th green with members of his family and watched from a greenside pavilion.

Several hundred spectators had gathered between the second green and the 17th tee, the closest public vantage point to the helipad. Irish police were positioned around the property, including along the beach beside the first tee.

The leaders were already into their third round by the time Marine One arrived. Lowry had opened with a birdie and extended his advantage before the presidential party reached the course.

A diplomatic stop before the trip west

The Associated Press reported that the two-day Ireland visit combined official meetings in Dublin with Trump’s attendance at the tournament on the west coast, linking the formal diplomatic program with a major sporting event at a course owned by his family business.

Before traveling to County Clare, Trump met Ireland’s president, Catherine Connolly, and Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Martin had invited him to attend the Irish Open during a St. Patrick’s Day visit to Washington earlier in the year.

The 2026 Amgen Irish Open runs from September 10 through September 13 at Trump International Golf Links, a course on the Atlantic coast near Doonbeg.

Trump is expected to remain for the final round on Sunday, when the tournament champion will be decided.

The AP said the trip was also an opportunity for Irish leaders to discuss trade and other international issues with the U.S. president. Ireland hosts substantial American corporate investment, making the economic relationship an important part of the official meetings.

The Doonbeg stop followed the Dublin program rather than replacing it. Trump traveled from the capital to Shannon Airport and then continued by helicopter to the west coast for the tournament.

Doonbeg prepared for a presidential-scale security operation

RTÉ News reported that Irish police and American security personnel had spent days preparing for the visit, including helicopter practice approaches over County Clare.

Airport-style screening was introduced for spectators, while temporary road and airspace restrictions were put in place around the resort and nearby communities.

The arrival created a brief collision of two very different schedules. Secret Service movements and a presidential motorcade had to be coordinated without losing sight of a sold-out European Tour event already in progress.

For spectators gathered near the second green and 17th tee, it became something more than a normal Saturday at the Irish Open: tournament golf below, Air Force One overhead and Marine One landing beside the course.
