President Trump announced a new policy at his Madison Square Garden rally to benefit family caregivers.

“I am announcing a new policy today that I will support a tax credit for family caregivers who take care of a parent or a loved one. It’s about time that they were recognized,” Trump said.

“They add so much to our country and are never spoken of,” he continued.

Trump added it’s time to “recognize” these workers after his campaign previously pledged to step up for seniors and the family members who care for them.

Policy documents released during the Republican National Convention in July mentioned that Trump promises to protect and bolster Medicare while focusing on at-home care for older Americans.

A campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, told USA Today on Friday that Trump “will take care of our seniors by shifting resources back to at-home senior care, overturning disincentives that lead to care worker shortages, and supporting unpaid family caregivers through tax credits and reduced red tape.”

It was not immediately clear how much tax incentive Trump was proposing or how the credits would work.

Trump told Joe Rogan he would consider eliminating income taxes and replacing it with tariffs.

“Did you just float out the idea of getting rid of income taxes and replacing it with tariffs?” Rogan asked.

“Were you serious about that?” he added.

“Sure, but why not?” Trump responded.

The proposal was, by Yahoo Finance’s count, at least the 12th distinct tax cut promise Trump has made in recent months. The dizzying array of pledges include his calls for fully extending his 2017 tax cuts with modifications and an array of add-ons such as eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits.

The family caregiver focus on Sunday night from Trump is an echo of a long-term care plan that Kamala Harris unveiled earlier this month. And beyond that, the former president’s ideas expand into ones that would upend the IRS entirely.

In a recent podcast appearance with Joe Rogan, Trump doubled down on an idea he has toyed with for months to eliminate income taxes entirely because, in his view, tariffs will bring in so much revenue.
