President Trump never misses a moment to crack a joke, and often the jokes are very intentionally laced with hard truth.

That happened again today as President Trump was meeting and chatting with EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen.  What a ridiculous name!

Anyway, the two were chatting about tariffs and here’s how it went:

“You’re known as a tough negotiator and dealmaker,” Von Der Leyen begins to say before Trump interjects.

“And fair,” Trump says, which causes the room to chuckle.

“And fair,” she responds.

“That’s less important,” Trump quips.

The room then cracks up again in response.

You are known as a tough negotiator and deal maker. But fair.

What is in front and fair. Yeah. And what is in front of us— that’s most important.

If we are successful, I think it would be the biggest deal each of us has ever struck. Sure.

So, I’m very much looking forward to it. Ever struck by anybody, that’s true. Yeah. Yeah. That’s true.

Right now we have that, uh, that honor goes to Japan. We just struck a deal with Japan, as you know.

And, uh, we’re very close to a deal with China. We really sort of made a deal with China, but we’ll see how that goes.

And we have numerous other deals and mostly I’m just gonna charge tariffs and, you know, there’s not a deal per se, but people are gonna pay tariffs.

And we’re doing them at the low end, not the high end, because we don’t want to hurt anybody.

And, uh, pretty well, but, uh, you and I both figured this is, this is really the biggest trading— Mm-hmm— partnership in the world, so we should give it a shot, right?

Yeah. Very much looking forward to that.

Oh, thank you very much. Thank you. I do too.
