President Trump turned a live tech interview into a must-see political moment Monday when he called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in the middle of Huang’s appearance at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles.

Huang put the call on speaker. The president then delivered a blunt message to a room packed with technology leaders: America cannot let fear, red tape, or a wave of AI doomsday predictions hand the future to China.

The full exchange shows Trump joking with Huang before driving straight into the fight over AI, data centers, and American leadership:

Trump said the idea that robots are about to take over the world has been turned into a political and economic “hoax.” He argued that the people pushing America to slow down are giving Beijing exactly the opening it wants.

“The happiest group is China,” Trump told the room. He warned that American companies are already looking abroad when permitting and infrastructure obstacles make major projects harder to build here at home.

That is the real pressure point in this debate. AI does not run on slogans.

It runs on chips, power, data centers, construction, investment, and a country willing to build.

Trump described data centers as the oil of the next generation—an industry capable of transforming communities, creating wealth, and powering entire sectors of the American economy. He was equally clear that prudence is still necessary.

But prudence is not surrender, and caution is not a license to freeze the United States while China races ahead.

Axios reports that Huang’s onstage position was more measured than a simple rejection of every safety concern. He said whistleblowers who raise specific problems should be heard, and that a company should slow or pause if its own systems are genuinely out of control.

At the same time, Huang rejected predictions that AI will end the world as unsupported by science. His answer puts a useful dividing line on the table: investigate real failures, demand accountability for real risks, and refuse to let speculative catastrophe become an excuse for sweeping government control.

The All-In hosts came back to that point immediately after the call, with Chamath Palihapitiya and David Sacks reacting to what had just happened onstage:

The timing could hardly be bigger. Some of the most powerful figures in artificial intelligence have recently called for slower development and more government involvement.

That push is now colliding with an America First argument that excessive regulation can protect incumbents, choke off challengers, and weaken the country in a strategic race with Beijing.

The Associated Press reports that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Elon Musk have all supported some form of slower pacing or stronger oversight. The report also notes that Speaker Mike Johnson expects administration officials and technology leaders to hold a broader discussion about safety and regulation.

Johnson said Congress must avoid panic and “hyper regulation” while protecting America’s competitive edge. Vice President JD Vance has raised another concern: frontier companies asking Washington to regulate them can create a “Trojan horse” that entrenches the biggest players and shuts smaller competitors out.

Trump’s position cuts through that fog: fix concrete problems and keep humans responsible.

Do not let the companies with the most lawyers write a rulebook that only they can afford. And never let Washington regulate America out of first place.

That is a far stronger starting point than fear.
