World War II hero and former Republican United States Senator Bob Dole has died this morning at the age of 98.

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation tweeted: It is with heavy hearts we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep. At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years. More information coming soon. #RememberingBobDole

In February 2021, Dole announced he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer and in July 2021 was receiving immunotherapy to treat the disease, forgoing chemotherapy due to its negative effect on his body.

In January 2018, President Trump honored war hero, former Republican presidential nominee and Kansas Sen. Bob Dole at a congressional Gold Medal Ceremony on Wednesday.

Washington Examiner – Trump praised Dole, the only former GOP presidential nominee to enthusiastically endorse his White House bid in 2016, as a “true American hero” and someone every lawmaker should admire during his remarks at the Capitol.

“Bob, that is the legacy you have left our nation and it will outlive us all,” the president said.

RIP Bob Dole. Thank you for your brave service to our nation.
