A 78-year-old Navy veteran was waiting for a bus after a hospital visit when police say a 15-year-old stranger approached and killed him in a random knife attack.
The allegation is horrifying on its own. Then Illinois State Police revealed what surveillance video showed the accused teenager wearing: a clown costume.
John Wesley Allen was found in the roadway near 76th Street and State Street in East St. Louis shortly after 10 p.m. Monday.
Allen was a retired bus driver, a Navy veteran, a devoted churchgoer and the youngest of six siblings.
His family called him “Baby Boy.”
FOX 2 reported that state police helped identify the juvenile suspect before agents arrested him at a nearby residence:
Local station KSDK 5 On Your Side reported that Allen had not been feeling well Monday and went to a Veterans Affairs hospital for testing. The 78-year-old Navy veteran had spent more than three decades driving buses before retiring and was still an active churchgoer.
His family said he intended to stop by his sister’s East St. Louis home afterward. Investigators said he was waiting at a nearby bus stop when the attack occurred.
Relatives said Allen was identified in part by the hospital bracelet that remained on his wrist. Less than an hour before the killing, neighborhood Ring footage reportedly captured the accused teen carrying a large knife and approaching homes.
The station reported that the teen could be heard saying, “I have a gift for you.” Allen’s relatives said they had never seen the teenager before and could not understand why a stranger would target the beloved family man.
Allen lived in a senior community in St. Louis and often crossed the river to see his sisters. The bus stop was only a short walk from the home he intended to visit.
His family had worried about him traveling alone at his age, but he cherished those visits. Monday’s trip followed the same familiar routine until a stranger allegedly turned it into a nightmare.
There is no known connection between Allen and the accused teenager. Police have described the attack as random.

Allen spent more than three decades driving buses for Bi-State, Vandalia and Greyhound before retiring.
He had recently returned from a church convention with family members. His sister Marie Stanford said he told her it was one of the best times he had enjoyed in years.
“He said I feel so good since I came from that convention,” she recalled.
Allen’s relatives described him as dependable and full of faith. His niece Tenia Stanford said her uncle always left loved ones with the same message: “We do it out of love.”
His family wants the service, faith and love that defined Allen’s life to outlast the grotesque circumstances of his death.
Allen’s sister fought through tears while describing what the family lost.
“He’s the best brother that someone took away,” she said. “And I’m going to miss him.”
ABC 7 Chicago reported that the 15-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder. Because the accused is a juvenile, authorities have not publicly released his name.
The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office is seeking to move the case out of juvenile court and prosecute the teenager as an adult. He has remained in custody since his arrest.
Illinois State Police said video showed the suspect in the clown outfit. Authorities have not announced a motive or disclosed any prior relationship with Allen.
State officers said they quickly identified the juvenile and arrested him at a residence. The teen appeared in juvenile court Thursday and was ordered held at least until his next hearing.
The requested transfer to adult court has not yet been decided. If granted, it would move the first-degree murder prosecution out of the juvenile system.

The legal process will determine the teenager’s guilt. The moral center of this story is not difficult to find.
A veteran who spent decades moving other people safely through the St. Louis area was killed while waiting for the transportation system he knew so well.
His family is now arranging a funeral instead of welcoming him through the door for another unannounced visit.
They deserve answers. They deserve justice.
John Wesley Allen deserves to be remembered for far more than the costume worn by the person accused of taking his life.
