President Donald Trump has made his choice in the suddenly explosive fight for control of the Republican National Committee: he wants Joe Gruters to stay in the chairman’s seat.

Trump issued what he called his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of Gruters after RNC co-chair KC Crosbie launched a challenge for the party’s top organizational job.

The timing makes this more than a routine personnel endorsement.

Republicans are still absorbing a painful midterm result that cost them control of Congress. Crosbie is arguing that the party needs an honest reckoning and a change in direction.

Trump is now making clear that he sees the incumbent chairman—not his challenger—as the person to rebuild for 2028.

In other words, the battle lines are drawn.

The Associated Press reported that Trump praised Gruters as a longtime “MAGA Warrior” and credited him with turning the RNC into a focused organization built to advance the America First agenda.

Trump also pointed to Gruters’ record in Florida, where the two men have worked together for years.

Gruters served as chairman of the Republican Party of Florida from 2019 through 2023. During that period, Republicans erased Democrats’ long-held voter-registration advantage and strengthened their hold on the state.

Trump emphasized that Gruters helped deliver his Florida victories in 2016, 2020 and 2024. He also recalled that Gruters recognized him as Sarasota County’s “Statesman of the Year” years before the 2016 presidential campaign transformed American politics.

The endorsement was not subtle.

Trump said Gruters should return as chairman, remain a trusted partner and help position Republicans for success in the next presidential election.

That intervention came just one day after Crosbie told the RNC’s membership that she would run for chair.

Axios reported that Crosbie announced her bid in a letter to the committee’s 168 members. She called the midterm outcome a serious setback and questioned whether the national party had done enough to address voters’ concerns, support Republican candidates and nominate contenders capable of winning difficult races.

The White House reportedly did not receive advance warning.

According to Axios, administration officials were furious that Crosbie—herself elevated with Trump’s backing—challenged the president’s preferred chairman without first giving the White House a courtesy call.

The report also described the financial pressure hanging over the contest. An administration official warned that the RNC could lose fundraising appearances by Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet officials if Crosbie wins.

The same official said Trump could block the committee from using his name, image and signature in fundraising appeals. For a national party preparing for the 2028 presidential cycle, losing those tools would change the race from an internal disagreement into a fight over the RNC’s ability to raise money.

Crosbie has served as RNC co-chair since January 2025 and previously worked as the committee’s treasurer. She is not an outsider attacking the organization; she is the second-ranking official arguing that the existing operation fell short.

The dispute therefore reaches beyond a disagreement over campaign tactics.

It is also an early test of whether RNC members will continue to treat a sitting Republican president’s choice of party chairman as effectively decisive, or whether the midterm losses have created an opening for members to chart a different course.

Trump has publicly acknowledged the scale of the setback while insisting Republicans will return stronger.

Gruters entered the RNC chairmanship only last year.

He had been serving as the committee’s treasurer when Michael Whatley stepped aside to run for the open U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina. Gruters then won the chairmanship unanimously at the RNC’s August 2025 meeting after receiving Trump’s endorsement.

Whatley’s Senate defeat is now part of the larger political backdrop to this leadership contest.

The damage went far beyond a handful of close races. Democrats broke through in states the GOP had counted on and captured both chambers of Congress, forcing the party to confront questions about turnout, candidate quality, economic messaging and the limits of relying on Trump’s personal coalition when he is not on the ballot.

Axios described Trump as defiant in the immediate aftermath.

Texas, in particular, has become a symbol of how dramatically the map shifted.

The state that has anchored Republican presidential math for decades produced some of the cycle’s most startling results, intensifying the debate over whether the losses reflected a temporary backlash or a deeper realignment.

Crosbie is betting that enough RNC members want a visible break with the operation that oversaw those results.

Trump is betting that his endorsement will close that opening and keep Gruters in place.

There are practical stakes as well.

Axios reported that a White House official warned a Crosbie victory could affect access to the party’s most powerful fundraising draws. Trump, Vice President JD Vance and administration officials could stop appearing at RNC fundraising events, and the committee could lose permission to use Trump’s name and likeness in appeals.

That would be a formidable threat for any national party organization trying to replenish its finances after a punishing election.

Still, the formal decision does not belong to Trump alone.

The RNC’s 168 members will elect the party’s leadership at their January meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona. Those members now face a choice between the sitting chairman backed by the president and a co-chair who says the election result demands change.

The contest will reveal how much appetite exists inside the committee for challenging Trump’s judgment at a moment when Republicans are searching for answers.

For now, the president has left no doubt about where he stands.

He wants Gruters in charge—and he is putting his political weight behind that outcome.
