This morning, in a statement on the White House lawn, President Trump told the media that he just signed a proclamation on asylum. The order will suspend granting asylum to migrants who cross our U.S. border with Mexico illegally for up to 90 days.

Trump explained the urgency of his proclamation and blamed the immigration crisis squarely on the Democrats if they refuse to work with him and the Republicans to finish the wall and enact new immigration legislation,“People can come in but they have to come in through the points of entry, and that to me is a very important thing”.  Trump called out the Democrats for stonewalling on votes that would change immigration, saying,  “Again, I reiterate, we need Democrats votes. They have to pass new immigration laws because they’re flooding our country. We’re not letting ’em in, but they’re trying to flood our country. We need the wall. We’re building a wall. But we need it all built at one time, and quickly. It’s very important, we need Democrat support or new immigration laws, to bring us up to date.”

Trump disparaged the current immigration laws calling them “obsolete” and “incompetent”. He blamed the Democrats for refusing to take action to fix the “obsolete” immigration laws, telling the press they’re “the worst laws any country has of anywhere in the world—and it’s only because we don’t have the Democrats votes. So, we need Democrats votes, so we can change immigration. We’ll have no trouble whatsoever at the border. We want people to come into our country, but they have to come into our country legally.”

Trump explained that the United States is not against legal immigration, telling them that we want, and need workers to come into our country to fill the massive number of jobs in his booming economy. The president reiterated that we want people to come in legally, “We want people to come in through the merit system so that they can work for all of the great companies that I have coming into our country” he explained. Trump touted his amazing economy and his success in negotiating to bring manufacturing and tech jobs back to the US: “We have many car companies coming in. We have many tech companies coming in. We have literally hundreds of companies moving back into the United States. We need people. You see the unemployment numbers are at record lows. We need people in our county. But they have to come in legally. We need merit. We need some votes from the Democrats.”

Reuters – The order, which goes into effect on Saturday, means that migrants will have to present themselves at U.S. ports of entry to qualify for asylum. Immigrant advocates say the administration has deliberately slowed the processing of migrants at official ports, forcing them to wait for days or weeks to request protection.

The Trump administration lost a legal battle on Thursday, when a federal appeals court in California ruled that it must continue a program begun under former President Barack Obama that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were brought into the country illegally as children, known as Dreamers.

Trump said the ruling on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was good news because now the administration can appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“The DACA will now hopefully go to the Supreme Court where it will be given a fair decision,” Trump said.
