House Democrats reportedly will bring out the ‘big guns’ to halt a Republican-led bill to require proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections.

The House of Representatives intends to vote on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, next week.

The legislation would require “documentary proof of United States citizenship” to vote in federal elections.

“The SAVE Act will safeguard our elections by ensuring only American citizens vote in federal elections,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said.

“Requires state election officials to ask about citizenship before providing voter registration forms. Requires an individual to provide proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in federal elections,” Johnson said.

“Allows state officials to accept a wide variety of documents that will make it easy for CITIZENS to register to vote in federal elections. Provides states with access to federal agency databases so they can remove noncitizens from voter rolls and confirm citizenship for individuals lacking proof of citizenship,” he continued.

“Directs DHS to determine whether to conduct removal proceedings if a noncitizen has been identified as having registered to vote in federal elections. Requires DHS to notify a state chief election official whenever an individual has been naturalized to ensure our newest citizens are able to exercise their right to vote,” he added.

According to reports, Democrats are attempting to whip up votes against the proposed legislation.

Per Axios:

In a whip question — a roundup of the coming week’s votes with instructions for how leadership wants rank-and-file members to vote — House Minority Whip Katherine Clark’s (D-Mass.) office told House Democrats they are “urged to VOTE NO” on the bill.

That means that Democratic leadership will send its whip team to cajole colleagues into not supporting the legislation.

The bill, Clark’s office said, would “prevent Americans from registering to vote with their drivers’ license alone” and would make a passport the “only acceptable standalone form of identification.”

They added that the bill would create an “extreme burden for countless Americans” and “further intimidate election officials and overburden states’ abilities to enroll new voters.”

Elon Musk commented and said those who oppose the SAVE Act are “TRAITORS.”

“Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS What is the penalty for traitors again?” Musk said.

FOX News reports:

Under the legislation, voters would be required to provide proof of citizenship via IDs and documentation such as a passport, a government-issued photo ID showing proof the individual was born in the U.S., military IDs, or a valid photo ID as well as documentation showing proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, the legislation states.

Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy introduced the legislation in May, with Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, introducing the Senate’s companion bill, and received widespread support from Republican lawmakers who said it would secure elections. Johnson notably unveiled the bill earlier this year alongside former President Trump in a high-profile press conference at Mar-a-Lago.

“Secure elections are a key cornerstone for any representative government; without them, we won’t have a country. Radical progressive Democrats know this and are using open border policies while also attacking election integrity laws to fundamentally remake America. That’s why I am proud to introduce the SAVE Act with Speaker Johnson and my Republican colleagues, along with the invaluable support of citizens and organizations that recognize we must end the practice of non-citizens voting in our elections,” Roy said on May 8.

Johnson circulated a 22-page report late last month urging House members to pass the legislation, contending there is “irrefutable evidence that noncitizens have been illegally registering to vote and have illegally voted in U.S. elections.”
