The man who helps choose the Super Bowl halftime headliner just put himself in the job.

Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

And yes, it is the same Jay-Z whose company has spent years helping the NFL decide who gets that stage.

The announcement landed Monday night during the Dallas Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles broadcast with a short, deliberately cocky video.

Jay-Z sat in the stands with goats gathered around him as “Public Service Announcement” played in the background.

The caption was only five words:

“GOAT’s out of the bag.”

This was not a leak, a rumor or an anonymous report.

It was the official reveal from Apple Music, the NFL and Roc Nation.

The NFL confirmed that the 25-time Grammy winner will take the halftime stage on February 14, 2027. The game will bring the Super Bowl back to SoFi Stadium, home of the Rams and Chargers, for the first time since the Los Angeles venue hosted Super Bowl LVI in 2022.

The league noted that Roc Nation has produced the halftime show since entering its partnership with the NFL in 2019. During that run, the stage has gone to Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny.

The announcement came during halftime of the Cowboys-Eagles Monday Night Football game on ESPN. It arrived only days after Jay-Z performed two anniversary shows at the same Inglewood stadium, turning the venue into both the setting for his latest concerts and the site of his next global television moment.

The NFL also pointed to Jay-Z’s 25 Grammy Awards and his inductions into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a legacy booking built around an artist whose influence extends from records and touring into the business that now shapes the halftime show itself.

Now the founder of Roc Nation is stepping out from behind the curtain.

That is what makes this announcement different.

Jay-Z is more than another superstar who got the call.

He is the superstar whose company has helped make the call.

The Associated Press reported that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had one request when the league began working with Roc Nation: Jay-Z should perform whenever the moment felt right to him.

According to the report, Jay-Z described the booking as the latest step in a 30-year journey that began with his debut album, “Reasonable Doubt.” He framed the Super Bowl stage as a continuation of his work in music and culture, not a sudden detour into spectacle.

The timing is no accident.

Jay-Z just closed a concert run at SoFi Stadium celebrating the 30th anniversary of “Reasonable Doubt” and the 25th anniversary of “The Blueprint.” Guests during the broader run included Beyoncé, Rihanna, Eminem, Nas, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, John Legend and DJ Khaled.

That guest list will guarantee months of speculation.

Beyoncé will be the first name most people mention. She headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in 2013 and returned during Coldplay’s performance three years later.

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg will be mentioned too, especially after appearing during Jay-Z’s recent Inglewood finale and after leading the 2022 halftime show at the same stadium.

None of those guests has been officially announced.

But the catalog is not the question.

Jay-Z has more than enough records to build a 13-minute set that stretches from “Hard Knock Life” and “Big Pimpin’” to “Empire State of Mind,” “Run This Town” and “Public Service Announcement.”

The real question is whether viewers will see the choice as overdue—or as the ultimate example of a man hiring himself.

CBS Sports reported that this will be Jay-Z’s first Super Bowl halftime appearance in any capacity. The announcement video placed him alone at center stage, surrounded by the “GOAT” imagery, and made the self-selection angle impossible to miss.

The report also underscored the unusual power arrangement behind the moment. Roc Nation has helped the league select and produce halftime talent for years, while Jay-Z remained off the performance list himself.

CBS noted that Jay-Z will bring East Coast hip-hop to a West Coast stadium and follow Bad Bunny, who led the 2026 show.

The Los Angeles setting also carries history: Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg led the previous SoFi Stadium halftime show in 2022, joined by Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.

The new booking places another hip-hop heavyweight at the center of the game, but with an unprecedented layer of control behind it. Jay-Z is not arriving as a performer chosen at arm’s length from the production team; he founded the company working with the NFL on that production.

That restraint is now over.

There is also a larger business story here.

The Super Bowl halftime show is not a normal concert booking. The performer steps into one of the largest television audiences in America.

Every song, camera angle, guest and controversy is magnified.

Jay-Z knows that machinery from the inside.

He knows how the act is selected, how the show is sold, how the surprise guests are protected and how a catalog is condensed into a few breathless minutes.

That could make him uniquely prepared.

It could also make every creative decision look like one more benefit of controlling the room.

Either way, the NFL has guaranteed itself a halftime story that will not disappear before February.

The performer is one of the most successful rappers and businessmen in American music.

The producer is his company.

The venue is the same stadium where he just finished an anniversary run.

And the man who helped decide who should take the biggest stage in television decided the answer was Jay-Z.

Now he has to prove he made the right pick.
