Fresh details are filling in the picture after federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home before sunrise Monday.
The operation reportedly began around 6 a.m. and involved Homeland Security Investigations agents executing a warrant secured by the Justice Department.
That timing was dramatic. The legal authority behind the search is even more important.
Federal investigators arrived with a warrant approved by a judge in an active criminal investigation.
Video from outside the home captured the federal presence as the search unfolded:
Trending Politics reports that two sources familiar with the case say investigators are examining immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. The outlet says the Justice Department later confirmed that the investigation is criminal in nature, though officials have not publicly identified the specific offense under review.
The report also places the search in the context of long-running allegations surrounding Omar’s immigration history and a 2009 marriage. Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, and those allegations have not been established in court.
No charge or arrest was announced Monday. The warrant affidavit and any inventory of property taken during the search also remained under seal or otherwise unavailable to the public.
Major questions remain unanswered. The basic facts are no longer a rumor: HSI agents carried out a judicially authorized search at the home of a sitting member of Congress as part of a federal criminal investigation.
Fox News reports that agents arrived at Omar’s home at approximately 6 a.m. Eastern. Two sources familiar with the matter tied the investigation to immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.
The outlet also points back to September, when White House border czar Tom Homan publicly confirmed that Omar was the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation. Omar said at the time that federal officials had not contacted her and dismissed the inquiry as a political attack.
After Monday’s search, the Justice Department confirmed that HSI had executed a judicially authorized warrant secured by the department. Officials described the enforcement action as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation but did not identify the suspected offense, reveal what agents sought, or say whether any evidence was removed from the home.
Omar responded hours later by accusing the Trump administration of targeting a political opponent. She said she was safe and vowed not to be intimidated.
Here is her statement in her own words:
I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.
I will not be…

Axios reports that Omar’s office and top congressional Democrats also condemned the search. The outlet independently confirmed the Justice Department’s description of the operation and called the search a major escalation in an investigation the administration had previously acknowledged.
The Justice Department told Axios that HSI executed a judicially authorized warrant in the Washington area as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The department again withheld the underlying allegation and did not release the warrant materials.
Axios also reported that Omar’s office framed the operation as political retaliation, while Democratic leaders attacked the administration over the timing and use of federal law enforcement. Those objections raise a political fight over the search, but they do not change the existence of the warrant or the criminal investigation behind it.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries quickly issued his own response, calling the raid “egregious” and accusing the administration of abusing federal law enforcement.
His statement showed how rapidly Democrats moved to turn the search into a political confrontation:

Democrats can call it intimidation. Omar can call every allegation baseless.
Neither response erases the fact that federal investigators presented enough evidence to obtain a search warrant from a judge.
A warrant is not a conviction. Omar remains entitled to due process, while her seat in Congress provides no immunity from a lawful investigation.
President Trump has spent years arguing that powerful political figures should face the same laws as everyone else.
If investigators found evidence of immigration fraud or another federal crime, they should follow it without fear or favoritism. If the evidence does not support charges, the case should end there.
For now, the most significant new detail is the scope of the escalation. What had been a publicly acknowledged investigation has moved into a court-authorized search of Omar’s home, carried out before dawn by federal agents.
The next decisive facts will come from the warrant, any property inventory, or a charging document. Until then, Americans should keep their eyes on the evidence — and reject the idea that political status places anyone above the law.
