Harmeet Dhillon is leaving the Justice Department after a 19-month run that turned the Civil Rights Division away from woke ideology and back toward equal treatment under the law.

Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed Thursday that Dhillon has resigned as assistant attorney general for civil rights. Her departure comes two days after the midterm elections, but Dhillon says the decision was made weeks ago.

She told Fox News Digital that White House chief of staff Susie Wiles asked her to remain through Election Day so the department’s massive nationwide monitoring operation would stay on track.

The first reports described the departure as a major loss for the Justice Department and noted that no official reason had yet been given.

[Fox 7 Austin](https://www.fox7austin.com/news/doj-civil-rights-chief-harmeet-dhillon-resigns-says-white-house-asked-her-wait-until-after-midterms), reporting Fox News Digital’s interview, says Dhillon decided to leave weeks before Republicans lost the midterms. She said Wiles asked her to delay the departure until the election was over, allowing her team to complete the largest election-monitoring effort in Justice Department history.

That timeline undercuts the instant media narrative that she bolted because Democrats won Congress. Her account places the decision before the vote.

Blanche then confirmed the resignation and praised her for leading with conviction, defending civil liberties and enforcing the law without fear or favor.

The left despised the direction she set because it treated conservative civil-rights concerns as actual civil rights.

Under Dhillon, the division challenged race-based admissions and DEI programs, pursued religious-liberty and parental-rights cases, created a Second Amendment enforcement section and pressed states over voter-roll access and election law.

Dhillon answered in her own words Thursday evening. She called the job the honor of a lifetime and highlighted the fight against illegal DEI and the defense of women’s sports.

[The Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/db3ad709a2ff5a48c5d3a9e3f71963d6) reports that more than three quarters of the division’s workforce from the start of President Trump’s second term departed during Dhillon’s tenure. Dhillon welcomed the exodus of lawyers unwilling to carry out the administration’s priorities and called it the largest personnel self-purge in Justice Department history.

Critics accused her of abandoning the division’s traditional mission. Dhillon’s answer was blunt: the job was to enforce federal civil-rights law, not woke ideology.

Her record also included conventional civil-rights prosecutions that rarely fit the hostile caricature. The division prosecuted attacks on pregnancy resource centers and houses of worship while challenging school policies that hid a child’s gender transition from parents.

[The Justice Department](https://www.justice.gov/crt/staff-profile/assistant-attorney-general) notes that Dhillon entered government after years litigating free-speech, religious-liberty, election-law and civil-rights cases. That background explains why her version of civil-rights enforcement extended beyond the left’s preferred categories.

Dhillon leaves behind a division that has been rebuilt around equal protection, public safety and constitutional rights. Her replacement will inherit both that machinery and an incoming Democratic Congress eager to investigate the Trump administration.

The personnel change is real. So is the record: election integrity, gun rights, religious liberty, parental rights and merit-based opportunity were treated as civil-rights issues on her watch.

That is a legacy worth defending.
