A routine flight to Tel Aviv turned into a nightmare at 33,000 feet when violence erupted inside the cockpit and the passenger jet suddenly plunged toward the ground.
What happened next may have prevented a mass-casualty disaster.
Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Israel on Wednesday when the Boeing 737 MAX issued emergency signals, made a violent descent and diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The plane landed safely, and everyone aboard was accounted for.
But the first verified details from officials and passengers reveal just how close the flight came to catastrophe.

The Associated Press reported that a fight broke out between the two pilots and that one of them was armed with a knife, citing an Israeli official. Both the captain and first officer were injured and taken to a hospital after the landing, according to the Saudi airport.
The aircraft had departed Dubai roughly two and a half hours before its first emergency alert. Flightradar24 data showed it dropping from about 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in roughly one minute, then flying an erratic circle near the Jordanian border before turning toward Saudi Arabia.
The sequence was enough to put Israel on high alert. Officials feared a possible hijacking, and Israeli fighter jets were scrambled while the aircraft was still in the air.
A general emergency code was followed by a 7500 transponder signal, the code used to warn air traffic controllers of unlawful interference aboard an aircraft. Israel is investigating whether the violence was an attempt to attack Israelis, but authorities had not publicly established a motive as of Wednesday morning.
That distinction matters. Several early social-media reports described a terrorist attack or suicide mission as established fact.
The evidence released so far confirms an armed cockpit altercation, a terrifying loss of altitude, serious injuries and an active security investigation. The precise motive remains under investigation.
Inside the cabin, passengers did not need an official label to understand the danger.
Relatives and passengers told Israeli media that screams came from the front of the aircraft as it began losing control. When the cockpit door opened, witnesses said they saw blood and learned that a pilot had been stabbed with a pocketknife.
Then the people aboard fought back.
Passengers helped subdue the attacker while two off-duty pilots who were traveling on the flight stepped in to help regain control of the aircraft, according to passenger accounts reported by the New York Post and other outlets.
Sacha Roytman described the reported plunge and the intervention aboard the aircraft. His characterization of the episode as a terrorist attack remained an allegation pending the official investigation.

The New York Post reported that the off-duty pilots heroically landed the plane after the cockpit stabbing. Other reports have placed the number of people aboard anywhere from roughly 150 to 180, with several saying 174 passengers, including 27 children, were on the flight.

The exact passenger count was still inconsistent across early reports, but the outcome was not: the aircraft reached the ground safely and no passenger deaths were reported.
The flight data shows just how violent the incident became. One widely circulated visualization put the jet’s altitude change at 14,125 feet in 29 seconds during the most dramatic part of the plunge.

The allegation that special forces were among those who intervened had not been confirmed by the airline or Saudi officials. What is supported by multiple passenger accounts is that people aboard helped restrain the attacker and that pilots traveling as passengers helped bring the jet down safely.
The Saudi Gazette, citing the airport operator, reported that air traffic control received the distress call at 8:44 a.m. local time. Emergency crews mobilized, and the plane landed at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk at 9:45 a.m.
The captain and co-pilot were transported for medical treatment. Passengers received assistance in the terminal while Flydubai arranged a replacement aircraft.
Flydubai offered only a limited public statement, confirming that FZ1073 experienced an incident, landed safely in Tabuk and that all passengers were safe and accounted for. The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities and would release more information when confirmed details became available.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the situation was under control and that steps were being taken to bring the Israeli passengers home safely.
There are still major questions to answer. Investigators must determine what started the confrontation, who selected the unlawful-interference code and whether one pilot deliberately tried to seize or crash the plane.
But one fact already stands above the confusion of the first reports: when terror swept through that cabin, ordinary passengers and two pilots who were not supposed to be flying the aircraft reportedly moved toward the danger.
Because they did, a plane filled with families and children landed instead of becoming the site of an unimaginable tragedy.
