Former First Lady Jill Biden put up $35,000 for a chance to land a walk-on role in one of television’s most talked-about gay romance dramas.

It was not enough.

Biden made the bid during the New York City LGBT Community Center’s annual Center Dinner on April 16, where a role in the second season of HBO Max’s Heated Rivalry was placed on the auction block.

A reporter at the event captured the bidding war as it unfolded and revealed just how quickly Biden’s offer was left behind.

Two other bidders ultimately paid $125,000 apiece after the show’s producers made two walk-on packages available, turning the auction item into a combined $250,000 donation.

Good Morning America reported that the package included the walk-on appearance and dinner with members of the cast. The outlet cited The Center’s announcement that Biden raised her paddle at $35,000 before the bidding climbed far beyond her offer.

The show follows rival professional hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov as their secret romantic relationship develops away from the rink. Its Ontario cottage became a major touchstone for fans after the first-season finale.

Biden leaned into that reference when she acknowledged the loss herself.

The former first lady’s willingness to spend that kind of money for a few moments in a steamy television phenomenon is a revealing snapshot of the celebrity-political world the Bidens continue to inhabit.

But even $35,000 was apparently nowhere near enough to buy the experience.

The Center describes the annual dinner as a major fundraising event supporting its programs and services for LGBTQ New Yorkers. Tickets for the 2026 gathering started at $1,000 and included a cocktail hour, a three-course meal, awards, auctions and a performance.

Its event page now hosts a full photo album showing Biden among the guests, along with images of the bidding and other attendees. The organization says its work includes health and wellness services, recovery support, advocacy, arts programming and community programs.

That context explains why the walk-on role carried more than ordinary celebrity-auction value: every jump in the bidding directly increased the night’s support for The Center. What began as a chance to appear briefly in a popular television series became one of the dinner’s biggest fundraising moments.

Gay City News reported that Biden appeared as a surprise guest while Heated Rivalry creator Jacob Tierney and producer Brendan Brady received the Cultural Impact Award. Rachel Reid, whose Game Changers novels inspired the series, presented the honor.

The local outlet said the two successful bidders were each awarded a walk-on role after their combined contribution reached $250,000. It also reported that the evening raised more than $2 million overall for the organization.

Brooks Brothers CEO Ken Ohashi was honored at the dinner, while Melanie C performed for the crowd. Biden’s bid was not a scheduled part of the program; it became the headline-making moment because a former first lady unexpectedly entered the auction and then watched the price climb to more than three times her offer.

Contemporaneous coverage quickly spread the unusual sight of a former first lady bidding tens of thousands of dollars for a cameo in the queer hockey drama.

The second season is expected to adapt Reid’s The Long Game, with production scheduled to begin this summer and a premiere anticipated in 2027.

Biden will not be joining the cast through this auction. Two people willing to write six-figure checks will.
