Katie Zacharia’s first White House briefing had barely ended when the new press secretary delivered a major personnel announcement.
The Trump White House asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to step down as United States ambassador to Greece.
Fox News reported that Zacharia confirmed the decision directly after Tuesday’s briefing. “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” the press secretary said, while also calling Guilfoyle an asset to the administration and wishing her well.
The report tied the departure to allegations involving an unpaid bill, access to diplomatic events, gifts, travel, workplace conduct and outside business interests. Those claims are disputed and have not been adjudicated.
An attorney for Guilfoyle challenged key portions of the account. Her side said money mentioned in the controversy was tied to speaking engagements that predated her nomination and maintained that she followed official travel guidance.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also pushed back on reporting built around anonymous sources. By Tuesday, however, the White House had moved from defending its ambassador against unnamed accusations to publicly requesting her resignation.

Guilfoyle issued her own statement as the news broke. She described representing the United States in Greece as the honor of a lifetime and thanked President Trump and Rubio for trusting her with the assignment.
She flatly denied the allegations and promised to defend her integrity. Her response framed the departure as the end of a public-service chapter while making clear that she rejects the accusations surrounding it.
Serving as the United States Ambassador to Greece has been the honor of a lifetime. I will forever be grateful to President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for entrusting me with the extraordinary privilege of representing the greatest country in the history of…

Trump later gave reporters his own blunt account. He stressed that Guilfoyle was not a member of his family, noted that she had dated his son years ago, and said he did not like what he had read.

Trump refused to hide behind a powerful ally or pretend the controversy did not exist. His administration made a decision, and Zacharia announced it directly on day one.
The competing claims still deserve a full examination. Guilfoyle denies wrongdoing, her attorney disputes major details, and a resignation by itself decides none of those factual questions.
The White House action was unmistakable. Zacharia’s first briefing was brief, disciplined and far more consequential than anyone expected.
