In the face of violent and destructive protests, the men and women tasked with enforcing federal immigration laws continuously put themselves in harm’s way.

And as ICE agents deal with threats to themselves and even their families, many have taken steps to conceal their identities.

For one supposed legal expert who recently appeared on MSNBC, that fact is enough to give anti-ICE protesters — at least in some situations — the legal authority to physically attack those officers.

As Breitbart reported, Joyce Vance laid out her threadbare argument by claiming that people might think that uniformed ICE offers are taking part in a “kidnapping” just because their faces are obscured:

“And I think it’s important for us at this point to be very plain-speaking when we say that this is not normal, it’s not acceptable, and it’s a danger sign. You know, we are well past the point where we can just identify danger signs and say, oh, there might be problems down the road. The problems are here, they’re in the right now.”

“And as we see people being pulled off the streets — you know, the danger to law enforcement, quite frankly, is that when you’re masked like that and people don’t know who you are, someone might exercise their lawful right of self-defense to protect themselves, thinking they’re being kidnapped,” she added. “So the notion that this is for law enforcement’s protection is utterly ludicrous. And we need to do away with that.”

Meanwhile, anecdotes abound regarding the threats that ICE agents continue to face while attempting to carry out their duties:

The Department of Homeland Security shared some shocking statistics about the trend recently, as NewsNation reported:

President Donald Trump vowed Wednesday to investigate who may be funding escalating attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, as federal data shows assaults on immigration officers have surged nearly 700% compared to last year.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the increase in attacks on federal agents as violence against ICE and Border Patrol officers intensified over the Fourth of July weekend, disrupting enforcement operations and allowing potentially dangerous individuals to remain in the country.

Court records reveal that 10 protesters wearing body armor and carrying automatic rifles fired dozens of rounds at a Texas ICE facility after launching fireworks, wounding one officer. In Portland, Oregon, four people were arrested for attacking officers, spraying graffiti and throwing bricks at an ICE office.

Here’s some additional coverage of the trend:
