Sens. Thom Tillis (NC) and Lisa Murkowski (AK) became the first two Republican senators to call for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem.

Tillis said he had no confidence in Noem, saying “I think she should go.”

“Yes, she should go,” Murkowski told NBC News.

NBC News explained further:

Tillis and Murkowski, who have shown willingness to break with the administration more than other GOP lawmakers, made the comments days after federal officers shot and killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, where an immigration officer killed Renee Good this month.

Tillis said Noem or President Donald Trump have to decide whether she should step down.

DHS did not provide a comment on the senators’ remarks, but the White House pointed to Trump’s comments earlier in the day.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he still has faith in Noem, calling her work at the border “a tremendous success,” while noting that her accomplishments happened alongside border “czar” Tom Homan “and the whole group.”

Homan on Tuesday took over the reins in Minneapolis, replacing Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino as the main point of contact for immigration enforcement operations on the ground there.

House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said House Democrats would begin impeachment proceedings against Noem if President Trump does not fire her.

“Kristi Noem should be fired immediately, or we will commence impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives,” Jeffries said in a statement.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” he added.

Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) introduced an impeachment resolution against Noem earlier this month.

"I will be filing Articles of Impeachment against @KristiNoem. I’ve had enough. She has turned ICE into a rogue force, violating the Constitution, tearing families apart, and leaving death in her wake. From Chicago to Minneapolis, her recklessness cost lives, including Renee Nicole Good. This isn’t just dangerous—it’s impeachable. I’m fighting back," Kelly said.

CBS News has more:

Tillis, who is retiring, said his doubts about Noem go beyond her department's handling of the immigration clampdown in Minnesota.

"I can't think of any point of pride over the last year," Tillis said. "She has taken this administration into the ground on an issue that we should own. We should own the issue of border security and immigration. But they have destroyed that for Republicans, something that got the president elected. They have destroyed it through their incompetence."

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska later echoed the sentiments shared by Tillis.

"I've lost confidence in her," Murkowski told reporters. "We would be better served with new leadership."

Murkowski and Tillis are known for periodically breaking with the Trump administration. Both senators voted to confirm Noem last year, which Murkowski pointed to on Tuesday.

"I had great hopes for her in the department and I've been disappointed," she said.
