In the latest drama surrounding the ownership of Twitter Inc., the social media company released a court filing on Thursday that says the billionaire Elon Musk is under federal investigation for his $44 billion takeover bid for the company.

After months of making bold deals with Twitter and then backing out, Musk was sued by the social media company to try and ensure the billionaire wouldn’t back out on his deal again and hurt the company’s value more than he already has.

Twitter is now trying to gain access to documents related to a federal investigation into Musk’s handling of his proposed acquisition. Attorneys for the social media company have implored Delaware Judge Kathaleen McCormick to make Musk’s attorneys release the relevant documents.

“Elon Musk is presently under investigation by federal authorities for his conduct in connection with the acquisition of Twitter,” the attorneys wrote in the court filing.

“Through counsel, he has changed substantive correspondence with those authorities concerning their investigations,” the filing said. “Twitter wants those documents, because they bear upon key issues in this litigation.”

“This game of ‘hide the ball’ must end,” added the attorneys.

Back in April, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) began looking into how Musk initially disclosed his major stake in Twitter. The records that Twitter seeks include drafts of an email to the SEC, and a presentation to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

In September, Musk’s attorneys turned in a “privilege log” which specified documents to be withheld from discovery. This lof included the SEC email and FTC presentation, according to Twitter.

Musk, who has made a big deal about the censorship on Twitter, has been a major proponent of protecting Americans’ First Amendment.

Given his public promises to make Twitter mor10e conducive to free speech, it is no surprise that the federal government is investigating him and trying to squash his attempts at taking over the major social media platform.

However, in response to the released court filing, Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro said that it is actually Twitter’s executives who are under federal investigation. Spiro claimed that the court filing was just a “misdirection.”

Musk is currently set to close his deal with Twitter by October 28. If this does not happen, the two parties will be back in court in November.
