In the world of Uber, it a big deal if a driver refuses service. The riders can also immediately rate a driver. The service is usually customer-friendly…but not in this case:

Uber claims they are “looking into” a driver who blatantly denied congressional interns a ride to the Trump International Hotel in DC. The interns claim that the driver didn’t like the Trump hats they were holding The driver asked about the hats and then said, “Well, I can’t do this ride.”

The interns scheduled an Uber ride from the area of George Washington University to the Trump International Hotel…They never made it there. The driver saw the “Make America Great Again” hats and refused service to the group.

Intern Matthew Handy described the exchange: “He’s like, ‘Is that a Make America Great Again hat?’ We’re like, ‘Yes, sir. It is.’ He said, ‘Well, I can’t do this ride.'”

Handy continued, “I’m a black male in America that supports and voted for Donald Trump… We’re supposed to be a country that accepts everybody for who they are, a melting pot, but the moment I say or do something that doesn’t coincide with their political beliefs, I’m the bad guy,” said Handy, who is interning for Illinois GOP Rep. Mike Bost.

Another passenger in the car, 33-year-old Adria Barrington of Tallahassee, who is interning for Arizona GOP Rep. David Schweikert, said she found the experience frightening.

“Denying me service — because I know we were denied service based on our political thoughts and views — will not change my political thoughts and beliefs,” Barrington said. “Denying me service is only going to make me fight harder to prove to everyone that it is conceivable to be an African American and a conservative.”

FOX 5 DC reports:

Handy said the interns want the driver fired and an apology from Uber.

“We also want a statement acknowledging that he’s been terminated because not only did he break Uber’s laws, he broke D.C. law,” he said. “Because you cannot discriminate because of somebody’s political beliefs.”

The intern who ordered the Uber was not charged when the driver allegedly refused to take the group.

Uber released a statement saying, “We aim to provide a reliable service to everyone who uses Uber. We have reached out to both the rider and the driver, and continue to look into this.”

It is unknown if the driver still has a job with Uber.
