Anne Schedeen, the actress best known for playing Kate Tanner on NBC’s ALF, has died at 77.
For millions of Americans, Schedeen was the no-nonsense mother trying to keep a suburban home together while a wisecracking alien puppet caused chaos in the garage.
But one line from her family’s farewell is getting attention for another reason: it brought President Trump into an otherwise personal tribute.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Schedeen’s family announced her death in a Facebook post, saying she had “passed peacefully.”
Entertainment Weekly quoted the family tribute this way:
She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of creative energy, whip smart humor, delight in her family, adoration for little dogs, burning hatred for Trump
That is the line that turned a standard Hollywood death notice into a political story.
Trending Politics called her an anti-Trump actress, and it is easy to see why the phrase jumped out.
Plenty of Hollywood figures have made hating Trump part of their public identity. In Schedeen’s case, the sharpest political line appears to have come from her own family’s tribute, not from the role most viewers knew her for.

People reported that a cause of death was not provided.
The outlet also noted that Schedeen starred in all four seasons of ALF, playing the mother of the Tanner family from 1986 to 1990.
Before ALF, Schedeen had worked across television and film, with credits including Emergency!, Three’s Company, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Paper Dolls, and Embryo.
After ALF, she appeared in Heaven’s Prisoners and later had a recurring role on Judging Amy.
People reported that she is survived by her husband of 55 years, Christopher Barrett, her daughter Taylor Barrett, daughter-in-law Hilary Flynn, her siblings, a niece, and her rescue dogs Roo and Red.
Schedeen will be remembered by many TV fans as Kate Tanner, the straight-faced mom who made ALF work as a family sitcom instead of merely a puppet gag.
Still, the Trump line is what sent the story beyond the entertainment pages.
Even in death, Hollywood’s obsession with President Trump found a way into the conversation.
