Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Monday pressed Saudi Arabia to join the ongoing operation against Iran.

The Republican senator proposed a “mutual defense agreement” with the Middle Eastern country.

“Finally, to my friends in Saudi Arabia: I’ve been your biggest champion. I think the crown prince has taken Saudi Arabia in a completely different direction, in a good way,” Graham told Sean Hannity.

“But here’s what I want to say to Saudi Arabia tonight: I’m willing to do a mutual defense agreement with your country to give you protection in perpetuity. Under the agreement I’ve been pushing, and I hope we can continue to talk about, if you’re attacked by Iran, we would go to war for you,” Graham continued.

The South Carolina Republican added, “To Saudi Arabia: our embassy was hit in Riyadh, do you not have an obligation to join the fight with us?”

Earlier this month, multiple drones attacked the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, days after the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes against Tehran.

“The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was subjected to an attack by two drones according to initial estimates, resulting in a limited fire and minor material damage to the building,” Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense previously wrote on the social platform X.

A day later, Saudi Arabia condemned the Iranian drone strikes against the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh.

Graham drew lots of criticism for his comments, leaving some perplexed that he thinks he has the authority to offer “defense agreements” to foreign countries.

“Where does he think he derives the authority to unilaterally offer permanent ‘defense agreements’ to foreign countries? Who exactly made this effeminate weirdo emperor of the world? I don’t remember voting on that measure,” Matt Walsh commented.

Graham also sparked backlash for saying he would be with Israel until “our dying day.”

“To all the antisemites to all the isolationists, forget it. I’m not with you. I’m with Israel,” Graham said.

“I will be with Israel until our dying day. They’re the best ally we could hope for,” he continued.

The South Carolina Republican said in a social media post that Riyadh is refusing to use force against Iran, which recently named the son of slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as its ruler.

“It is my understanding the Kingdom refuses to use their capable military as a part of an effort to end the barbaric and terrorist Iranian regime who has terrorized the region and killed 7 Americans,” Graham wrote on X. “Question – why should America do a defense agreement with a country like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that is unwilling to join a fight of mutual interest?”

The National News Desk requested comment from Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry but hasn’t received a response. The office said in a statement earlier in the day, though, that it has condemned Iranian attacks within Saudi Arabia.

“The Kingdom affirms that it retains its full right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its security, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents, and to deter aggression,” the ministry said. “Targeting civilian objects, airports, and oil facilities reflects nothing but a determination to threaten security and stability and to persist in blatantly violating international charters and international law.”
