A school bus carrying over 40 children on board crashed in Austin, Texas, resulting in over a dozen people sustaining injuries.

“According to Austin-Travis County EMS, 15 people were taken to the hospital and two are dealing with serious injuries,” KVUE reports.

Emergency officials said the Leander Independent School District bus was carrying 42 children and an adult.

Wednesday was the school’s first day of the new school year.

KVUE shared additional details:

Initial reports were that 10 patients were taken to the hospital, but ATCEMS has since confirmed that 15 were taken to the hospital from the scene of the crash. Two people are dealing with serious injuries, while the other injuries are considered non-life threatening.

TCSO says the crash is considered to be a major collision, and the Texas Department of Public Safety is also responding.

A reunification center has been set up at Round Mountain Baptist Church in Leander, and all people who do not need to be take to the hospital will be taken to the church.

KVUE learned that the bus originated from Bagdad Elementary School in Leander.

“I’m aware of the Leander ISD school bus crash near Sandy Creek on Nameless Rd. Thankfully, no fatalities or life threatening injuries reported among kids,” Travis County Judge Andy Brown said.

“TCSO, ATCEMS, ESD1 & StarFlight responded quickly & are on scene. Reunification center is at Round Mountain Baptist Church,” he added.

Leander ISD sent an email out to parents regarding the crash that involved its school bus.

At 4:05 p.m. the district said, “We want to make you aware that this bus was involved in an accident while transporting students this afternoon on Nameless Road.”

LISD said first responders are on scene and staff are with the students.

“At this time, we are working to assess the situation and will share confirmed details with you as soon as possible,” the district said.

Parents can pick up students at Nameless Road past Palomino Ranch before Sweet Summer, LISD said.
