President Trump gave Penn State’s championship wrestlers a White House welcome they will not soon forget.

The president walked across the Rose Garden toward the team Tuesday as the wrestlers, coaches, and guests stood together behind the NCAA championship trophy.

Then the group spotted him.

The cheers came fast and loud. Trump kept walking toward the team, taking in the reception as the national champions applauded their host.

White House communications adviser Margo Martin shared the moment:

That is the sound of a team enjoying its trip to the White House.

And Penn State did not arrive in Washington with an ordinary championship season behind it.

The Nittany Lions won their fifth consecutive NCAA Division I wrestling team title in March, completing another dominant run under head coach Cael Sanderson.

According to Penn State Athletics, the team finished the national tournament with 181.5 points. That broke the NCAA record of 177 points Penn State itself had set one year earlier.

The margin was just as striking. Penn State finished more than 50 points ahead of second-place Oklahoma State, which ended the tournament at 131.

Four Nittany Lions won individual national championships: Mitchell Mesenbrink at 165 pounds, Levi Haines at 174, Josh Barr at 197, and Luke Lilledahl at 125.

Six Penn State wrestlers reached the national finals, tying a program record, and eight earned All-American honors. Every one of the team’s 10 wrestlers contributed points to the record-setting total, from the opening round through Saturday’s placing bouts and championship finals.

The 2026 title was Penn State’s fifth straight and its 13th in the last 15 contested NCAA tournaments. Sanderson now owns 13 team championships as a head coach, two shy of the all-time NCAA record.

Penn State’s four champions went 20-0 across the tournament. Mesenbrink finished with three technical falls and a major decision, while Haines added three technical falls and a pin during his five-match run.

Barr won two technical falls and two major decisions before taking the 197-pound final, and Lilledahl fought through three decisions on his way to the 125-pound crown.

The NCAA championship recap also records the scale of the victory: Penn State clinched the team title during the consolation rounds before the championship finals even began.

Mesenbrink capped the night with a 20-4 technical fall and collected both the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler honor and the NCAA’s Most Dominant Wrestler award.

Haines closed his Penn State career as a two-time national champion and four-time All-American. Barr and Lilledahl each completed undefeated seasons with their first individual NCAA titles.

The scoreboard kept building after the team race was already over. Penn State finished with 17 technical falls, four pins, and five major decisions, collecting 40.5 bonus points across a tournament in which the champions repeatedly overwhelmed opponents before the final whistle.

The trophy marked another entry in one of the most commanding runs anywhere in American college sports.

Here was another view of the welcome:

Trump has long shown an unusual level of interest in wrestling.

He attended the 2025 NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia, where Penn State captured the previous title in its current streak. He also welcomed NCAA wrestling champions to the White House during his first term.

Former Penn State champion Bo Nickal has described meeting Trump during a 2019 White House visit and recalled that the president spent extra time talking with the wrestlers.

Tuesday’s reception carried the same energy.

There was no hesitation from the athletes when Trump appeared. They were on their feet, clapping and cheering before he reached the group.

For a team built on discipline, pressure, and doing the hard work when nobody is watching, the afternoon offered a rare chance to stop and celebrate what it had accomplished.

The national champions brought their trophy to the White House. President Trump walked out to meet them.

And Penn State made sure he knew exactly how happy they were to see him.
