The SAVE America Act has been a priority of the Trump administration and many GOP lawmakers who want to protect future elections from the rampant fraud ushered in by states and districts that do not require voters to present identification.
But more than a few Republicans on Capitol Hill have pushed back against the proposal, either in principal or because passing it might be a challenge they don’t want to attempt.
One prominent official who seems to be in the latter camp is Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who recently lost his primary election in a failed bid for a fifth term.
As the Daily Caller reported, Cornyn’s remarks were aimed specifically at Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), one of the bill’s most vocal supporters:
Cornyn also urged Lee in a separate post on X to stop publicly blaming fellow Republicans — including Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota — for the GOP elections bill’s failure to gain enough support within the conference.
ADVERTISEMENT“Mike, I am a co-sponsor and have repeatedly voted for this, but you don’t have the votes. Leader John Thune can’t change that. It is math. Try focusing on Democrats instead of Republicans. Republican on Republican attacks are hurting our chances to win the majority in November,” wrote in a 1 AM post.
Lee fired back at Cornyn and rejected the criticism, writing, “On what planet is this an attack on Republicans? We have majority support for the bill. In this rare circumstance, we should put it on the floor and keep debating it until it passes.”
Lee added that his push for the legislation was “not an attack on Republicans” but rather “a plan of attack against voter fraud.”
The Utah Republican received significant support in response to his retort:

Its an attack on the back door deals that kill popular bills like this.
It has transitive properties since he and thune became powerful by supporting things publicly while simultaneously killing them in the back room.
Its an assault on how they legislate.

And Breitbart provided additional commentary from Lee:
The disagreement sparked online after Cornyn reposted a comment saying Senate Republicans could pass the legislation over Democrat objections.
“We’ve got 50 votes as of last week. That’s all we need. Force Democrats to hold a talking filibuster and then pass it with JD’s help. Include it in reconciliation vote by ignoring the advice of the parliamentarian. Or change the cloture threshold,” the post stated.
Cornyn rejected the idea, saying, “Not gonna happen, and every one (except the naive or misinformed) knows it.”
Lee later reposted Cornyn’s comment and pushed back on the Texas Republican’s claims.
