House Majority Whip Tom Emmer walked into ABC’s Sunday studio with a message the network clearly did not want to linger on: Americans should look past the left’s preferred labels and read what its candidates actually support.

When “This Week” host Jonathan Karl laughed off Emmer’s warning about communists on the midterm ballot, Emmer did not retreat. He sharpened it.

“There’s nothing Democratic about socialism,” Emmer said, pointing viewers directly to the Democratic Socialists of America platform.

The full ABC News transcript shows how quickly the exchange changed direction during a tense interview about prices, President Trump and the battle for control of Congress.

Emmer acknowledged that four-dollar gas and six-dollar diesel are unacceptable. Then he warned that frustration over prices is not a reason to hand power to ideological extremists whose published program reaches far beyond ordinary Democratic economic policy.

Karl replied that most Democrats would reject the communist label and said there were not many communists on the ballot. Emmer cut in: “Well, you’re wrong, they are communists.”

Karl tried to soften the point by conceding that there were “some Democratic socialists.” That was precisely the rhetorical escape hatch Emmer refused to grant him.

This was not a debate about whether every registered Democrat is a communist. Emmer’s target was the organized socialist wing now fielding candidates, writing policy demands and pulling the party toward positions that would have sounded disqualifying a generation ago.

The clash also came after Karl pressed Emmer on high prices and the political headwinds facing Republicans. Emmer did not deny the pain at the pump; he argued that voters should compare today’s frustration with the governing program waiting on the other side of the ballot.

The honest test is not the label. It is the platform.

DSA’s own newly approved 2026 national program says police departments should be demilitarized, police unions disempowered and public funding redirected as steps toward “fully abolishing” the police and prison system.

No Republican consultant wrote those words. The organization described its own destination in black and white.

The same platform promises universal healthcare at no cost to individuals, with more public hospitals and publicly funded medical training. Whatever friendly name is placed on that promise, taxpayers would be on the hook for the system beneath it.

DSA activists are not hiding the law-enforcement agenda, either. On Saturday, the group demanded that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani fire NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, drive ICE out of the city and abolish two specialized NYPD units.

That demand landed in the middle of an election season already dominated by public safety, immigration enforcement and the cost of living.

Voters are being told to treat all of this as ordinary center-left politics. Then the same movement publishes plans to dismantle core law-enforcement institutions and replace private decision-making with government control.

Emmer’s language was deliberately blunt. But the substance of his warning is sitting in plain sight.

DSA also says its national program is “clear” on abolishing ICE. The organization amplified that demand again after calling for an end to detention and deportations, punishment of federal agents, expanded free movement and amnesty.

Words matter in politics because labels can be used to smuggle radical ideas into respectable company.

“Progressive” sounded safer than socialist. “Democratic socialist” sounds softer than a movement that openly talks about abolishing police, prisons and immigration enforcement.

Karl wanted to debate Emmer’s vocabulary. Emmer wanted Americans to debate the consequences.

Republicans should force that argument every day until the midterms. Let the media fight over the description while voters judge the agenda.

The left published the blueprint. Emmer simply held it up on national television.
