George Conway, who ran for Congress on an ‘anti-Trump’ message, finished fifth place in the Democratic primary for New York’s 12th Congressional District.

The former conservative lawyer and the ex-husband of President Trump’s former Senior Counselor, Kellyanne Conway, tallied about 6 percent with nearly 87 percent of the expected votes in.

The race in the deep-blue district is to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler.

Before the election, Conway was asked if his anti-Trump platform ‘got through’ to voters.

The Hill shared further info on the race:

New York State Assemblymember Micah Lasher (D) is projected to win the Democratic primary for the Manhattan-based House seat currently held by his former boss, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), beating a crowded field of contenders, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Lasher, who once served as an aide to Nadler and held top positions under Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (D), defeated seven other Democrats in a race that quickly morphed into a proxy battle over artificial intelligence (AI) regulation and safety.

Nadler and Hochul endorsed Lasher in the race.

Lasher’s most serious contender was fellow New York State Assembly member Alex Bores (D), who made a name for himself over AI regulation and safety legislation signed into law by Hochul. Groups on both sides of the tech regulatory issue have spent money to either take him down and support his candidacy.

Several groups advocating for stricter AI regulations spent more than $20 million to back Bores’ candidacy, while another AI heavyweight group, Leading the Future, poured over $8 million against him as a broader debate over whether to have states regulate the industry individually or create a national framework plays out.

The race also featured President John F. Kennedy’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg, who finished in third place.

Schlossberg was asked if he had any regrets about the way he ran his campaign.

The polls showed a tight race between Lasher, Bores and Schlossberg. An Emerson College poll from May showed Lasher and Bores as the leading contenders.

Conway was also a familiar name in the election. He is well known as a conservative lawyer who turned into a vocal critic of President Trump. He co-founded The Lincoln Project, which is an anti-Trump super PAC.

The 12th District became one of the most expensive congressional primaries in the country, with Bloomberg spending millions of dollars in support of the race.

AdImpact reported that $26 million was spent on ads for the race.

Tuesday’s winner is favored to take the election in November due to the district’s strong Democratic leaning.
