PJ Sarotte explains in detail below about why he started the petition:

The students of Michigan State University were dramatically affected during the Corona Virus Pandemic of 2020. Now, in our efforts to return to normal our world has once again been thrown into absolute disarray. This afternoon (7/29/21), at 4:42 PM Eastern Standard Time, Michigan State University’s President Stanley released a statement reversing his original stance on the vaccination status of all students and staff. President Stanley originally declared that students were not going to be forced to receive the Covid-19 Emergency Use vaccine. In his statement made today, the MSU President reversed his position stating the following.
“These recent developments and my commitment to keeping students, staff, and faculty safe have led me to update our requirements, including those for the fall semester. Today, I am announcing two key actions:

1. All individuals are required to wear masks indoors beginning Aug. 1 in all campus buildings and other MSU facilities in East Lansing and throughout the state. This requirement will be in place for at least the first weeks of the fall semester.

2. All students, faculty, and staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an FDA-authorized or WHO-approved vaccine by Aug. 31. Limited exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be provided.”
My name is Peter Sarotte and I am a current MSU Senior at James Madison College studying international relations. I am an active community member and run a student organization with over 7,500 active supporters. What caught my attention today in President Stanley’s statements was the secondary requirement, mandating all students and staff to receive one of the many mRNA Vaccines put forth by Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson and Johnson. It is incredibly important that we bring the spotlight to this issue immediately. All students, faculty, alumni, and community members need to recognize the fact that our basic civil liberties are being taken away from us. This is happening one institution, one CDC recommendation, and one mandate at a time.

It has been highlighted in the current news cycle that many Universities such as the University of Michigan, Syracuse University, Auburn University, Hawaii, and many more are pushing the boundaries of American civil liberties. According to the Washington Post, over five hundred Universities have attempted to implement similar strategies to those of President Stanley, and have been met with incredible backlash. Parents are pulling their students out of schools, donors are pulling funding, and social media has never been louder.

There are three goals of this petition. The first is to bring attention to this overstep of authority by a public institution funded by its attendees and the federal government. The second goal of this petition is to reverse the status of President Stanley’s orders, changing the wording in the mandate from ‘requirement’ to ‘strongly recommend’. The final goal that we wish to accomplish is to inspire students and staff at other schools to take a stand. William Bernbach, an American advertising expert stated the following quote, and it could not be more applicable to the current situation.
“If you stand for something, you will always find people for you, and against you. If you stand for nothing, nobody will be against you, and nobody will ever be for you.”

Students of Michigan State that were already enrolled prior to 2020 or became enrolled right as the onset of Covid began, have been thrust into a chaotic educational experience full of impartial learning experiences due to a rushed online curriculum, health-related anxiety, a product of Covid-19, and a dramatic alteration of foundational learning that takes place within a college experience. As a student of MSU, I experienced the disarray caused by MSU leadership. Students were spitting in tubes, removed from classes due to failed health status updates, and forced to adapt to a new educational experience miles away from the actual institution. Keep in mind that Michigan State University has not altered their tuition prices as well, but has increased the live-in requirement of students to two years. Not to mention the countless resources that were not available to many students during Covid. It seems to me that MSU leadership preaches constantly about mental health and the care of its students but repeatedly fails to uphold its promises of support and care.

Dear parents, educators, staff members, and students, I am pleading with you, that if you have disagreed or overlooked the entirety of the prior statements, pay attention to these words. Once the right to deny the government and its institutions to force any medical process on its people is taken away from us, we will only be able to once again enjoy that right if we fight for it. Keep in mind, this isn’t just taking a drug, it is an experiment, a trial run that ends in 2023.

We have the ability, as a community, to come together and reverse this decision. The MSU leadership team is made up of people too, they live in houses, drive cars, eat and breathe just like us. They are not immortal forces unable to be stopped. Sign this petition and show President Stanley that we are going to STEP UP and FIGHT against this mandate.

We do not wish to be impartial and ignorant. We understand that the COVID-19 Pandemic has devastated many of our communities. People have lost loved ones, friends, co-workers, and just people we know, and it has affected each and every one of us. The vaccines are saving people’s lives, there is no question about it. Elderly individuals and people that are immunocompromised are once again able to go out and live their lives and that is fantastic! My father has a rare auto-immune disease known as Multiple Sclerosis, which left him unable to see many people for a long time. I am thrilled that his vaccination status will allow him to live his life again.

This petition is not meant to point fingers at sides, this is not a left versus right petition, and it most certainly is not an individual perspective. We are all going to be affected by mandates such as these. Now, it’s a nine-month-old experimental vaccine, but what’s next? Once we lose the ability to say no, are we even American anymore? If you choose to take the vaccine that is on you, and if you choose not to take it, once again that is on you! It is your decision and you have the absolute right to determine what goes in and out of your body. I am afraid that the “medical and religious exemptions” proposed by President Stanley will not cut it.

For those of you that agree with what you have read above, sign the petition, share it with friends and family, and let’s spread the word. We are a free country and my intention is to keep it that way. For those of you that disagree, or are interested in more information, keep reading. We will outline the final parts of this petition in the following way. We will first reference facts and links that we believe all parents and students should know. Facts that are backed up by esteemed journalists, writers, doctors, and researchers from around the globe, as well as logical additions of statements made by the CDC and the World Health Organization.
