That is how you close out the biggest World Cup in history.

President Trump’s Sunday began in the sky above MetLife Stadium and ended on the field beside the most famous trophy in sports.

Marine One roared over the packed New Jersey stadium before kickoff. President Trump then emerged in a star-studded suite with First Lady Melania Trump, Barron Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Hours later, after Spain defeated Argentina in a dramatic extra-time final, the President of the United States walked onto the pitch for the trophy ceremony.

What a scene.

This was no quick ceremonial cameo. President Trump made a grand entrance, watched the entire championship match, conducted a little diplomacy from the suite, and helped close a record-breaking tournament hosted largely on American soil.

And the arrival alone was something to see.

The Associated Press reported that Marine One passed over MetLife Stadium roughly an hour before kickoff, giving the enormous international crowd an unmistakable look at the arrival of the American president.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino provided President Trump with 10 tickets for the final. Before entering the stadium, Trump spoke with Fox Sports and declined to choose between Spain and Argentina, although he admitted it was “hard to bet against Messi.”

The President also urged Infantino to bring the tournament back to the United States. The expanded competition had already set a new attendance record and turned American stadiums into the center of the soccer world for more than a month.

During the match, the World Cup trophy was brought into Trump’s suite. He smiled, gave it an admiring look, and patted the trophy before it returned to the field for the eventual champions.

There was plenty of presidential company in the suite.

Barron Trump, a longtime soccer fan, attended with his father and the First Lady. Rubio was also present, giving the American delegation both a family feel and a serious foreign-policy presence.

The VIP box also became a diplomatic meeting place.

Euronews reported that President Trump greeted Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in the suite after nearly two years of strained relations between their governments.

Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were also there as their national team played for the championship. The gathering put political leaders, royalty, Cabinet officials, and the First Family together for one of the world’s most-watched events.

Visible protective glass surrounded the presidential seating area, a reminder of the extraordinary security operation required for a sitting American president at a packed international sporting event.

The crowd reaction was mixed at one point. The Associated Press reported some boos when President Trump appeared on the stadium video boards at the end of the national anthem.

Videos from inside the building nevertheless showed the entire stadium focused on his arrival and presence throughout the day.

Then came the match itself.

The Associated Press reported that Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after 120 tense minutes, with Ferran Torres breaking the deadlock in the 106th minute.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made 12 saves, the most ever recorded by a goalkeeper in a World Cup final, but Spain finally found the one shot he could not stop. His historic performance kept Argentina level through regulation while Spain’s attack tested him again and again.

The final remained scoreless throughout regulation. Martinez’s record-setting performance kept Argentina alive until Torres struck 16 minutes into extra time.

Spain’s defense completed a historic tournament of its own. The champions surrendered only one goal across eight matches, the fewest ever allowed by a World Cup winner.

Argentina had survived a punishing road to the final and came within minutes of forcing a penalty shootout. Torres’ extra-time strike instead delivered Spain its second men’s World Cup championship.

Argentina was trying to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cups. Spain, whose only previous title came in 2010, instead returned to the top of the sport.

When the final whistle sounded, President Trump remained at the stadium and joined Infantino on the field as the trophy ceremony began.

That final walk put an exclamation point on a tournament that President Trump had embraced as both a sporting spectacle and a showcase for America.

The Associated Press reported that roughly 6.7 million fans attended the 2026 World Cup, smashing the previous tournament record. The United States hosted most of the matches in the 48-team competition alongside Canada and Mexico.

At a FIFA reception two days before the final, President Trump celebrated the event for bringing the world together. He recalled initially doubting whether America had become a true soccer nation before declaring, “we are a soccer country.”

The United States, Mexico, and Canada won the right to host the tournament in 2018, during Trump’s first term. Eight years later, he was back in office to welcome the world, fly over the final, and stand on the field for the closing ceremony.

The moment also carried a bit of continuity. President Trump and Infantino walked the same MetLife pitch after FIFA’s 2025 Club World Cup final, a dress rehearsal for the far larger global event that followed one year later.

The 2026 final was the tournament’s 104th and last match. It ended with Spain lifting the trophy, a packed American stadium roaring, and President Trump unmistakably at the center of the host nation’s final act.

America hosted the World Cup and brought the spectacle all the way to its final act.
