On January 2, 24-year-old Buffalo Bills defensive quarterback Damar Hamlin suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the field during an NFL game.

After making a miraculous recovery, Hamlin is remaining tight-lipped about the cause of his cardiac arrest.

In an emotional interview with ABC News’ Michael Strahan, Hamlin spoke publicly about his life-threatening experience for the first time.

Hamlin said that, before suffering a heart attack, he felt completely normal heading into the Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Strahan asked Hamlin if he remembers standing up after making a tackle before he collapsed on the field. After a long pause, Hamlin replied, “Um… That’s something I don’t really wanna get in too deep into – into detail of.”

“Your doctors in Cincinnati, they called your recovery ‘remarkable,'” said Strahan, continuing to push for details into his collapse and miraculous recovery. “Why do you think your recovery’s so remarkable?”

“First and foremost, just God,” Hamlin said. “I’m just thankful he gave me a second chance, you know? Just to live normally and just, you know… come out almost without a scratch on me.”

Strahan then addressed the question that a lot of people have right now: What caused a perfectly healthy 24-year-old athlete to go into cardiac arrest?

“You’re 24, peak physical condition, can run circles around me right now… How did doctors describe what happened to you?” Strahan asked.

Hamlin paused, contemplating his response, then said, “Um… That’s something I wanna stay away from.”

In a tweet about the interview, the founder of Turning Point USA Charlie Kirk reminded everyone that “Pfizer is the NFL’s 7th largest advertiser, spending nearly $120 million per season.”

Trying to get more information about Hamlin’s health status prior to the heart attack, Strahan asked if the physical tests the NFL conducted on him ever turned up anything that would suggest a cardiac problem.

“In the course of you having your physical, did anybody ever come back with… anything that was abnormal?” asked Strahan.

“Honestly no,” said Hamlin. “I’ve always been a healthy, young, fit, energetic human being, let alone athlete. So, it was something that was just – we’re still processing and I’m still talking through with my doctors just to see what everything was.”
