Relatives of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) received subpoenas amid the ongoing criminal fraud investigation into the Minnesota congresswoman.

According to The New York Times, Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, and at least one other family member received a subpoena.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents executed a search warrant at Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., on Monday.

Ms. Noor, a health care professional and author, did not reply to requests for comment sent by email and made in a call with someone who identified herself as a daughter of Ms. Noor’s.

Grand jury subpoenas are issued to gather evidence about possible crimes, and do not mean that the recipients themselves are under investigation. On Monday, Ms. Omar condemned the search of her home, calling it an effort by the Trump administration “to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” She has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing on immigration matters.

The specifics of the investigation into Ms. Omar remain unclear, but in recent months, federal investigators have been scrutinizing her family’s immigration history. The inquiry focuses in part on whether Ms. Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, lied or omitted information in immigration forms before becoming a U.S. citizen.

The subpoenas are another investigative step the Justice Department is taking just a few weeks before Election Day, a time when law enforcement officials typically avoid taking overt measures, such as executing search warrants and issuing subpoenas, that could be seen as trying to help or hurt a candidate. Prosecutors have sometimes been willing to carry out such steps if they have reason to believe evidence could be destroyed, or if other crimes could be committed.

According to the New York Post, Noor authored a recently published memoir about immigrating from Somalia.

The outlet noted that Noor also runs a Minneapolis-based consulting firm that says it secured “'more than $20 million in funding for health initiatives and consulted on projects backed by' the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United States Agency for International Development and other groups."

The New York Post shared further:

Omar’s 2022 congressional primary opponent, AJ Kern, obtained documents from a US Citizenship and Immigration Services information officer in 2023 showing “no record” of Nur Omar Mohamed having been naturalized as a US citizen, The Post reported earlier Monday.

Omar has long claimed she became a citizen at the age of 17, through her father’s naturalization.

The subpoena revelation comes one day after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raided the home Omar shares with her husband, Tim Mynett.

Omar has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and has accused the Trump administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement in an effort to intimidate her.

“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar said in a statement on X. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”

“I will not be silenced,” the congresswoman added.

US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro also revealed Monday that her office is conducting a separate investigation into Omar’s financial disclosures, which showed her and her husband’s net worth ballooned from between $15,000 and $51,000 in 2023 to between $6 million and $30 million in 2024.
