Former President Joe Biden gave the public a new update Tuesday on the aggressive prostate cancer he has been treating since last year.

The news came directly from Biden in a statement marking Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. His message included the clearest account yet of how last fall’s radiation treatment went.

Biden Describes the Result of His Radiation Treatment

In his September 8 statement, Biden said the radiation treatment he received last fall “worked as intended.” He thanked the doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals who have continued to care for him.

Biden also said he remains active and is finishing his memoir. He did not say that he is cancer-free or that all treatment has ended.

The wording matters. Biden described a successful response to a specific round of radiation, while also writing that medical professionals “continue to take such good care” of him.

He used the update to encourage men to speak with their doctors about screening and early detection. Biden said more than 330,000 American men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.

An Aggressive Diagnosis That Had Already Reached His Bones

The Associated Press reported in May 2025 that Biden’s office disclosed an aggressive form of prostate cancer after he experienced urinary symptoms. Doctors assigned the cancer a Gleason score of 9, placing it among the most aggressive grades.

By the time of the diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized to his bones. His office said it was hormone-sensitive, which meant it could be managed with treatment even though the spread made the disease more serious.

Biden’s office also said his last known prostate-specific antigen screening had been in 2014. At the time, his family was reviewing treatment options with his physicians.

The disclosure came less than four months after Biden left office. His medical team said the disease’s hormone sensitivity provided a path for effective management, but the bone metastasis meant the diagnosis was already advanced.

Treatment Continued Through Last Fall

CBS News reported in October 2025 that Biden was receiving radiation therapy and hormone treatment in Philadelphia. People familiar with his care said at the time that he was doing well and responding to treatment.

One month later, the network reported that Biden had completed that round of radiation. The update described the milestone as encouraging while cautioning that it did not necessarily mean his broader cancer treatment was over.

Tuesday’s statement now supplies Biden’s own assessment of that radiation course. It is an encouraging update, but it does not erase the seriousness of metastatic cancer or disclose every detail of his current treatment plan.

The statement also confirms that physicians have remained involved in his care. It does not identify any new drug, procedure, or change to the hormone-treatment plan that his office disclosed last year.

His Family Has Described a Difficult Year

The new statement follows a more difficult account from Biden’s son. The Associated Press reported in August that Hunter Biden told the BBC the cancer had spread beyond the previously disclosed bone metastases and was causing his father substantial pain.

Hunter said the illness had been hard for the family to watch. He also said his father continued to speak publicly about issues that mattered to him despite the physical toll.

A spokesperson for the former president declined at that time to add medical details to Hunter’s account. That left Tuesday’s direct statement as the next significant public update from Biden himself.

Joe Biden’s Tuesday message struck a more hopeful note without claiming the disease was gone. His central message was that the radiation did what his doctors intended, his care is continuing, and he is still working on the projects he values.
