Joy Behar was abruptly sidelined from Thursday’s episode of “The View” after a painful accident backstage left her with a dislocated shoulder.

The 83-year-old co-host had been filling in as moderator while Whoopi Goldberg was away filming a movie. Instead, Sunny Hostin took the center seat and opened the show with the unexpected news.

“Unfortunately, our dear friend Joy dislocated her shoulder,” Hostin told the audience as the crowd reacted with an audible gasp.

The program shared Hostin’s announcement and said it was sending Behar well wishes while she recovers.

The good news is that Behar’s shoulder was not broken.

Trending Politics reports that Behar caught a heel while she was backstage. Her representative said the shoulder was put back into place and that she is now on the mend.

The representative added that Behar is eager to return to the table and could be back around the middle of next week.

The incident forced an immediate reshuffle because Goldberg was already away filming a movie and Behar had been serving as her usual substitute moderator. Hostin took over the center seat while the audience learned why Behar had vanished from the day’s lineup.

The shoulder was dislocated rather than fractured, according to the representative. That distinction—and the fact that it was successfully put back into place—helps explain why the show is talking about Behar’s return in days instead of announcing an open-ended medical leave.

The report did not identify the person who assisted Behar backstage, say whether she was taken to a hospital, or disclose any treatment beyond confirming that the shoulder had been reset. It also did not indicate that the accident happened on camera.

The timetable suggests the injury was serious enough to knock her out of the live broadcast but is not expected to become a long-term absence.

Hostin tried to lighten the surprise announcement by joking that, with Goldberg and Behar both out, the moderator’s chair went to “the next oldest” co-host. She quickly revised that to “seasoned.”

The rest of Thursday’s panel included Sara Haines, Ana Navarro and Alyssa Farah Griffin, with former co-host Sherri Shepherd returning as a guest.

Behar has been one of the program’s most recognizable personalities since its 1997 launch, apart from a two-season break before she returned in 2015.

When the show promoted its 30th season in September, it underscored that longevity by declaring there was “only one Joy Behar.”

Her latest mishap also comes less than a year after another injury kept her away from the show for several days.

In November 2025, Behar revealed that she had broken a toe after dropping an iPad on her foot. She later joked about the painful accident when she returned to the table.

This time, viewers learned about her absence before the panel moved into the day’s scheduled discussions.

Behar had remained active at the table in the weeks leading up to the accident, including an on-air remembrance of the September 11 terror attacks on their 25th anniversary.

Behar’s injury happened away from the cameras, and neither Hostin nor Behar’s representative described a fall or offered additional medical details beyond the dislocated shoulder.

For now, the message from the show is straightforward: Behar is recovering, the shoulder is back in place, and she expects to return soon.
