With countless reasons often cited to celebrate America, Rep. Al Green (D-TX) is drawing attention for highlighting a far different source of pride.

Speaking ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Green said one of the things that makes him most proud to be an American is the ability to impeach a president.

According to Breitbart:

Video journalist and political correspondent Nicholas A. Ballasy asked Green what personally made him most proud to be an American heading into the nation’s 250th anniversary.

“I am very proud to tell you that impeachment is an option to remove a reckless, ruthless, lawless president,” Green answered. “I’m proud to know that that exists.”

Green made the remark after declining to comment on recent Democratic primary results, including the defeat of Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and victories by Democratic socialist candidates.

Asked whether the party’s mainstream could “have issues going forward” and “be paralyzed in a way during the midterms,” Green said, “Well, I rarely answer questions that are quite substantive without having given some considerable thought, so after I’ve given considerable thought to what happened, then I’ll record an answer. It’s been too early for me to acquire the intelligence that I’d like to have.”

His grandstanding drew some social media criticism:

And here’s what else he had to say recently:

Green’s remarks also come amid renewed attention surrounding a broader controversy involving an Air Force officer arrested near the Capitol.

According to The Hill:

Peaceful demonstrations are permitted on Capitol grounds, but a protester must remain alongside a member of Congress to speak openly from the steps.

Originally, Air Force Maj. Jason Watson was accompanied by Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who later left.

Upon the lawmaker’s exit, Watson was directed to come off the steps or face arrest, U.S. Capitol Police told The Hill. Watson was then arrested for crowding, obstructing and incommoding, the authorities noted in a statement.

Later in that article:

Watson’s actions were commended by Green in a follow-up video. The Texas lawmaker was notably thrown out of the chamber during Trump’s first joint address to Congress of his second term and his State of the Union speech earlier this year.

“He stood for impeachment of the president on the Capitol Grounds, and thereafter he walked up the steps where he was arrested, and he was taken away,” Green, who lost his Democratic primary in May, said of Watson.

“This is the kind of courage necessary to inspire others to understand that liberty and justice for all that we pledge allegiance to is something that we can make real. It’s more than an ideal. It is something that can be real for every person in this country if we but only have the courage to take the stand that Maj. Watson took,” he added.

The Air Force major could be court-martialed or face disciplinary measures under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
